'Lost' recap: Anybody else totally in love with James LaFleur?
One or two of you may have noticed that there was nary a mention of "Lost" last week on the Beehive. Between the Rogueing and the Art Hopping, I wasn't able to sit down and watch Wednesday night's episode -- titled "LaFleur" -- until days later. It may be late, but I'm ready to talk about it now (and I hope you are too).
There wasn't a whole lot of "Lost" mythology covered in the episode, so instead of the usual trying-to-figure-out-what-it-all-means business, I just want to gush about Sawyer. Maybe it's my ovaries talking, but I loved seeing the transformation of Sawyer from wise-cracking, fuselage-thieving, Hurley-bashing, Jack-envying con man to absolute romantic hero.
From jumping with no hesitation into the (alas, filled) well to save John Locke, to being the man with the (alas, "stupid" according to Juliet) plan to return to the beach, to saving Amy from the Hostiles (Others), to coming up with the wrecked ship story to tell the Dharama-ites, to preserving the truce between the Hostiles and the Dharma Initiative, to saving Horace Goodspeed from himself, to building up Juliet's confidence enough to deliver Amy's baby ... well, he's the Jack Shephard Jack Shephard wants to be, isn't he?
And let me take a moment to say something nice about Juliet. There are those who hate her and her smug little smirk -- for being an Other, for kissing Jack even though she sees he's in love with Kate, for rattling off Latin like some kind of book-learned know-it-all, for a variety of reasons. I've never had beef with Juliet, but I've never thought much of her, either. This episode changed that for me. I actually love Juliet with Sawyer, and here's why: despite everything that happened between Kate and him, and his love for her, Kate never really valued Sawyer. She used him.
But as we've seen since Sawyer washed up wet and shirtless on the beach after jumping out of the helicopter to save those bound for the freighter, Juliet has always had Sawyer's back. She follows his plans without question, even though she thinks they're stupid. And, more importantly, she calls Sawyer by his real name, James. It's clear that, unlike Kate, Juliet sees the real Sawyer, and values him. Loves him, actually, as we found out in Wednesday's episode.
Watching Sawyer bloom (like a flower ... ohmigod, la fleur means "the flower" in French. Clever!) was one of the highlights of the season for me. What did you think? What was your favorite Sawyer moment from the episode? I can't choose between Sawyer calling out Richard Alpert's guyliner tendencies or that sweet, proud grin he gave after Juliet saved Amy's baby.
Sadly, there's no new "Lost" this week, so we have time to ruminate on these final two thoughts:
1). Was Jimmy Barrett so embarrassed from getting his ass kicked by Don Draper that he gave up show business to join the Dharma Initiative? (Seriously, start watching "Mad Men" now. "Lost" won't last forever.)
2). The four-toed statue. It exists! That was it, right? Or could it have been some other ridiculously large monument standing tall on an island in the middle of nowhere? Does the statue have anything to do with the hieroglyphs seen on the Temple, home to the Smoke Monster? More importantly, does it have anything to do with Richard Alpert's eyeliner??

Wow-- that's some Sawyer (or should I say James)-gushing!
That episode is definitely different but, it's a good break from the so many "What?!" moments of Lost.
Fave moment of the episode? When Sawyer picked up the yellow flower and went in to a house in all "Honey, I'm home"- mode. That is so un-Sawyer, maybe more James-y?

yeah, i hadn't watched the episode until tonight, so i had to avoid reading this post for a while. i thought it was a good episode, just in the sense of straight story telling. it's been interesting to watch sawyer's progression over the length of the show.
enjoyable moments for me:
sawyer just jumping straight into con man mode
sawyer's crack about guy-liner
sawyer laying the smack down on alpert with all the facts

I love the Juliet and James combo too (at least for a while), which is why I was SO not happy when his eyes met Kate's at the end of the episode. He better have really meant it when he said 3 years was enough to get over somebody.

Oh, he's SO gonna ditch Juliet for Kate. Kate is totally pissed at Jack for siding with Ben, so of course she's going to run straight to Sawyer like she always does.
On the plus side... maybe we'll finally get to learn what Sawyer asked Kate to do for him. Remember when he whispered something to Kate right before jumping out of the helicopter? We never learned what that was, if I remember correctly.

i hate Kate with a passion. i don't know what it is, but there's a gene in us men that loves skanks. Sawyer has that gene and he'll ditch Juliet in a LOST minute.
What's so sad about Jack too is that he can watch Kate getting down with Sawyer, and he doesn't even hesistate to get back with her. See, men love skanks.
