arrow Passing the Rorschach test

WatchmenCANEW5YT.JPGAs I mentioned in an earlier blog, I got to see the much-anticipated "Watchmen" Tuesday night in Los Angeles. I spent Wednesday interviewing the cast, director and even "Watchmen" illustrator Dave Gibbons. You can look for those stories, plus a special on-line offering, over the next two weeks.

All of the stories will lead up to the film's opening on March 6. As a bonus, Fresno is on the list of cities scheduled to show the movie on the big IMAX screen.

I can't tell you what I think about the movie until it opens. But, I can tell you after seven failed scripts, full of bizarre changes to this much-heralded work, this production does the right thing. It goes back to the source material.

As part of my coverage, I asked for questions to be directed to the cast. It was Justin's question to Jackie Earle Haley (who plays Rorschach) that I used during my interview with the actor.

Justin's question was "What was the most difficult part of playing Rorschach, an individual who is very complex despite having a very black and white view of good and evil?

Haley sat still for several minutes after hearing the question. Then he finally said, "Playing this guy was literally like gazing into the abyss for months. He is just such a tweaked individual. He's a guy who has been absolutely guided by his upbringing.

"His mom was incredibly neglectful as a prostitute and an alcoholic and a drug addict. All of her behavior seemed to center around her self-centered needs. And she would justify those needs as though she was doing her best to provide for young Walter.

"And I think he could see that. That type of behavior is incredibly gray and complex. I think everywhere in this world he would see that kind of self-centered behavior continuously justified and excused by the complexities in this world. I think at some point in time he needed this black and white sense of things so he could survive."

The talented actor had a lot more to say about the role. You will be able to more read about him and the rest of the cast as the release date grows closer.

Comments:

If this isn't one of the best movies this spring, I don't know what is. I seriously wish I could have some kind of temporal shift (a-la LOST) so that I could go see it tomorrow.

The previews I'm sure aren't doing it a whole lot of justice....

I wonder how the battle between the Watchmen movie and X-men:Origins is going to go down? I got a lot of love for the Wolverine.. I just hope my schedule is clear enough I can see them both...

I don't know if you noticed, but if you go to the Web page we did, you can hear a recording of the question being answered.
