arrow Get ready for another episode of 'Lost'

And get ready for a whole lot more of the Jesus imagery because tonight's episode of "Lost," titled "'The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham," is all about what happens to John Locke after he turns the island's wheel of fortune and finds himself back in civilization (hint: he dies!)

Of course, everything on "Lost" means something and that includes characters' names. In this week's episode pre-analysis, Entertainment Weekly's Jeff Jensen helpfully breaks down John Locke vs. Jeremy Bentham for those of us who fell asleep in Philosophy class:

"Jeremy Bentham was a 18th century English ethicist and founding father of legal positivism, which stands in opposition to natural law, which was promoted by...17th century English philosopher John Locke, one of the founding fathers of the so-called Age of Reason.

The castaway formerly known as Locke has chosen a namesake that literally mocks his previous namesake."

Interesting. Civilization Bentham is the antithesis to Island Locke. Perhaps that's how he manages to turn the ever-doubtful Jack into a true believer. An even more interesting tidbit from Jensen about the real-life Bentham after the jump (stop reading now if you prefer to watch "Lost" completely blind, i.e. without back story, theory or possible teasers):

"Bentham was a staunch critic of the Jacobins, the troubling band of brothers that drove the French Revolution...Members of this political club were called the Jacobins because they met in an old convent called St. Jacques. In Latin, Jacques is Jacobus or Jacob. Hence, ''Jacobins.''

"The Others, who speak Latin, get their orders from Jacob, a derivation of ''Jacobus.'' Which in French is Jacques. Which in English is...Jack. Yep, I'm calling it. Jack = Jacob."

Very interesting, especially since in last week's episode, we saw Jack return to the island during the Dharma Initiative's 1970s heyday. Plus, look at who Jacob's two henchmen are -- Jack's father, Christian Shephard, and his half-sister, Claire, right? The dead family that wanders creepy islands together, stays together ...

Episodes about Locke very rarely interest me, so I'm not 100% sure tonight's episode will engage me as much as some of the others from this season. It certainly appears like we won't be getting very much (if any) action from the island. Still: mind open.

Comments:

I have a feeling this weeks episode is gonna answer alot of questions, and yet - totally leave tons more, in traditional LOST fashion...

I have a feeling, from the preview, that Ben is gonna be present at Locke's suicide. And FINALLY - we are gonna find out what Abaddon's whole deal is!!

And where does Walt figure into all this - why didn't he have to go back to the island?!?!?

AHH!!! So many questions!!!

Oooh, I'm lost already! There's a character named Jeremy Bentham on the show?

@Bethany: Yeah, it's confusing. Actually, Jeremy Bentham is the name John Locke uses once he gets off the island.
