arrow "American Idol:" Round Two = Ho Hum

I'm definitely not feeling this new setup of 36 semifinalists on "American Idol." If you thought the first group of 12 last week was lackluster, Wednesday night's dozen was even worse.

The judges must be banging their heads against the desk: How many times do they drill into these contestants that song choice is everything? Beyond that, most of the singers were inconsistent. Poor Mishavonna Henson, who sang "Drops of Jupiter," was the worst: Flat out boring.

Thank goodness Allison Iraheta tore up the show. She's only 16 and, as Kara DioGuardi told her, has no idea of how good she is. She was bold and confident. Best of all, she has a big, rocker voice. So I'm picking her as well as theatrical Adam Lambert to go through to the Top 12.

That leaves one more, and it's not an obvious pick. The remaining 10 were just not interesting ... which means I'd like to see Nick Mitchell (pictured here as himself), aka "Norm Gentle," move on to the Top 12. Why not? He may be over the top with his brash Norm Gentle persona (bright headband, glasses, shorts and white tails) but he's definitely memorable. And fun. He's like a mockumentary constestant playing the show for a joke. How can you not love that?

This is one of my 'never tell anybody I watch this' shows, but I gotta tell ya, I don't miss too many seasons. I guess I want to hear what my brain will be bombarded with before it actually hits the radio.

I agree with you 100%, last night's show blew. Other than the 16 year old, none of them really stuck out to the point I was amazed. I guess she set the bar high enough after she was done that no one else could really keep up...

I have to disagree about Nick though. He's like the Cloris Leachman of Idol, but he's nowhere near as cool as she was. He's got pipes, no doubt, but I think he'd be better off on Broadway.

I think I would rather see the kid from Arkansas that sang 'Man in the Mirror' or perhaps the red head that did the Betty Davis Eyes. It was pretty obvious that they could sing too, they were just scared out of their minds.

Ugh.

Don't these contestants ever watch previous seasons? Do they all really have such a skewed reality of who they are? The welder guy would not accept that he picked the wrong song. The 'soulful' guy who insists he wants to break in as the new Chris Martin.

I think what they see in past seasons is contestants disagreeing with the judges, and they do that rather than pick the right songs. No one argues with Paula Abdul, the one person who knows nothing about creating stars in the business. Kara has how many hit songs? Randy has produced how many hit artists?? Simon has found how many grammy winners? Produced how many hit shows????

Listen to the judges, people, not your mother, not your fellow contestants. Oh, heck, nobody from the show reads this anyway.

Horrible talent this year, but I really like the potential top 8.

@Stephen: I gotta add that, as a big fan of Coldplay, I found Matt Giraud's rendition of "Viva La Vida" absolutely appalling. As in slow motion I-can't-believe-he's-doing-this appalling.

laid up sick, so I tuned in a little last night and have tonight's on, so far - I saw Nick, Alison and Ark. "Man in the Mirror" boy last night - didn't really get into the Nick shtick, thought the Ark. kid was a little too jumpy with his moves for a song that doesn't beat like that - but Alison, wow! When I first saw her being interviewed I was annoyed, but then she opened her mouth - I haven't heard most of the others, but she wins in my book:-)

Allison rocks. Not only does she have an awesome voice, but she actually picked a good song. I think she'll go far...

@D: I totally agree. It's almost scary how good Allison is at 16 and how much she excelled versus the other 23 we've seen so far. She left them in her dust. Now, if she only keeps picking the right songs ...

@Felicia - I'm not sure there's a song she can't sing. She definitely has what it takes to win the thing...
