arrow The Year in Music Pt. 3: The Final Tidbits

yearinmusic.jpg

Sure, it's 2009, but it's OK to still talk about 2008 music -- thus the third and final part of my 2008 music survey.

Today, it's a bit of a questionnaire, asking you to dig deep into your iPod playlists and answer questions like which song annoyed you the most. It's all the stuff we didn't cover in the posts for favorite albums and favorite songs.

The questions are below. And I'm also giving you guys some year-end stats from Nielsen SoundScan, if you need to jog your memory.

2008 MUSIC QUESTIONS
1. What 2008 song annoyed you the most?
2. What album surprised you the most?
3. What album was the most disappointing?
4. What artist was your favorite "discovery" of this year?
5. What non-2008 album/song did you play like it was brand new?
6. What was the best concert you saw in 2008?
7. Who was your favorite local artist/band of the year?
8. What's your most-awaited release for 2009?

my most awaited release for 2009 has been the most awaited release for the past 7 years. Dr. Dre's Detox, haha. This album is never coming out. I find it comical how some rap fans actually think it's coming out.

1. What 2008 song annoyed you the most?

Probably something by some post grunge or emo band. I do my best not to listen to annoying songs.

2. What album surprised you the most?

My Morning Jacket's "Z" took me by surprise. It's a solid album with some amazing songs. Oh, Fleet Foxes! That album is great and was totally unexpected.

3. What album was the most disappointing?

I bought the new Gnarls Barkley album hoping it would destroy my senses, but it was only o.k. Still, I can't really complain about an album with a track as good as "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?"

4. What artist was your favorite "discovery" of this year?

Deerhoof. What can I say, singers with accents are cute.

5. What non-2008 album/song did you play like it was brand new?

There were a few I'm sure, but the ones I can think of at the moment are "Yesterday and Today" by Murs, and "Off the Record" by My Morning Jacket.

6. What was the best concert you saw in 2008?

2008 was a good year for concerts. My Morning Jacket at Coachella has to take it though. Those guys played with a emotional depth I hardly ever see at shows. Plus I was close enough to see them sweat; that always adds to my enjoyment of a show.

7. Who was your favorite local artist/band of the year?

Buffalo Guns. They just recently added some new members and a much better for it. They have a show tomorrow at the Starline, I suggest ya'll check them out!

8. What's your most-awaited release for 2009?

There has been no word, but I'm hoping the Arcade Fire, Radiohead, or MF DOOM come out with a new releases in 2009.

I find it oddly comforting I've only heard of two of the songs mentioned on these lists.

All good questions, but I felt like answering the first one sums up the musical bad part of 2008. Not to say the year was bad by any means.

1. What 2008 song annoyed you the most?
Not one song in particular, but ANY song with the supper-cranked Autotune. Is it me, or was that WAY..... over done this past year? It seems to suck the originality and character out of a voice. Most songs I think would have been very solid with out it.

4. What artist was your favorite "discovery" of this year?

Ibice'.
This local flamenco group makes you believe that
rockn'roll was invented in Spain in like the 1400's.
Stunning dancing/singing and crazy (!) rhythms.
[hint: they'll be part of the Food Not Bombs Party
at Full Circle Brewery on Friday the 23rd]

5. What non-2008 album/song did you play like it was brand new?

Bob Dylan's "No Direction Home"--the one that was released in conjunction with that Scorcese bio-pic on Dylan.

6. What was the best concert you saw in 2008?

Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl.
(Thanks to the Beehive for the first place I heard about it so that I could get online for the tickets [which sold out in about 20 minutes!])

7. Who was your favorite local artist/band of the year?

Poplord? The very loud and powerful Sparkle Jet?
Ibice' who I mentioned up top? Suicide Lounge when they
play the smokey ballads?

8. What's your most-awaited release for 2009?

This may sound dumb, but the answer is 'my own', cuz it's taking me so long to finish, but there should be *two* of 'em in 2009.
