Modest Mouse: Coming to Visalia next month
Visalia promoters Sound N Vision have announced a big show: Modest Mouse at the Visalia Fox Theatre on Feb. 23.
It's an all ages show. Tickets cost $30 and are available starting Thursday at foxvisalia.org, the Fox box office, Velouria Records in Visalia, The Cellar Door in Visalia and Valentino's Rock 'N Apparel in Fresno.
Mega-awesome promoter Aaron Gomes, the guy who also brought us Conor Oberst, is calling this his biggest show yet:
"Saying that I'm excited about this show is an understatement," Gomes says. "I've been a Modest Mouse fan since the mid-90s. This is undoubtedly the biggest show I've ever brought to Visalia. This show will sell out quickly, so be sure to buy your tickets immediately. This band is usually playing spaces four times larger than the Fox Theatre. To get this show in Visalia's tiny Fox Theatre is unbelievable!"

Holy crap! That's a pretty good concert announcement. Now if only Coachella would come out with their lineup already.

$30 here, $30 there...you're killing me, Oz!
Posted by: teresa at January 28, 2009 1:03 PM
I don't make the prices.
Maybe if we all cross our fingers we might get some ticket giveaways here on The Beehive.

PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW I CAN GET HOLD OF THE FRESNO STATE BULLDOG. IT DOESN'T COME UP UNDER TIMEOUT AT FRESNO STATE. I NEED TO ASK HIM WHY HE DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE BASKETBALL GAMES TO GET THE CROWD INTO THE GAMES AS THE PAST TIMEOUT HAS DONE.
CHERYL

@cheryl You're best bet is to contact FSU's Athletics Marketing Department.
@Oz I know you don't set the prices. Let's hope the ticket people are generous. :)

Sweeeeeeeet.

How has no one pointed out that Cheryl's comment has absolutely no connection to Modest Mouse?! AWESEOME.
Posted by: Cristobal at January 28, 2009 1:45 PM
Well, I was leaving up to people such as yourself Cristobal.
Even more interesting, I found it odd that she wants to get in touch with a mascot and came to a blog to do it.
Hmmmm.

30.00 for a well run, well produced, and well prepped band? Isnt bad at all,
it's cheaper than what you'll find for scalpers tickets for something here in the 'No. --and 'dude, no way,' cheaper than what you'll pay to see something at Save-Mart.
-This is an (inter)national act with a few good hits,
and a strong (very recent, very relevant,) following.
-and definitely will generate a buzz in terms of people not only saying:
-cool ModestMouse is coming here...
-cool, Visalia is pulling off bigger and better stuff.
The next question would be:
Why can't this happen in Fresno?
(but the answer that I'm focussing on?:
Who cares?
It's happening in Visalia, this is a totally excellent show and somebody's doing something right... Excellent!)

I suppose this is a good time to remind that Modest Mouse did sell out Rainbow Ballroom back in 2005. I think Numbskull put that show on.
Posted by: Mike Oz at January 28, 2009 1:53 PM
...hmmm, so if they did play here (prior to going big) and had an already established seat (played Rainbow Room) 4 years ago, --why didn't the return show happen here???
(more of a curiosity in the question.)

I can't tell you for certain, though I can offer a few guesses:
First and foremost -- promoters. The answer to every "How come Visalia gets _______ and Fresno doesn't" is Aaron Gomes. That guy has great relationships with bookers and bands.
Someone the caliber of Modest Mouse probably doesn't have much connection with a promoter in any given city, so it's probably more up to the band's booking agent and what promoters it has connections with. Again, Aaron Gomes is awesome when it comes to that.
Basically: Fresno needs an Aaron Gomes.

Every *block* needs an Aaron Gomes. Dude got Connor Oberst to sign my daughter's Bright Eyes album.

Mike Oz is right - Aaron Gomes just does a superior job as a promoter. I was happy to finally meet him in person, after all of these years, at the recent Dr. Dog show at the Cellar Door. Oddly enough, one of the opening bands was Delta Spirit, and they played Jimmy Kimmel a couple of weeks ago. So a band worthy of a major late night talk show was on the UNDERCARD of a show at The Cellar Door in Visalia within a couple of months. Pretty much amazing.
And, let me do my once-yearly soap box session on how The Rainbow Ballroom COULD be the answer to Fresno getting more mid-level shows, but the management is completely clueless. Sooooo frustrating.

I went to that Modest Mouse show at the Rainbow and have never seen a line as long as the one that night. It wrapped all the way around to the back of the rainbow. It was at the height of their huge single "Float On". So yes it can be done in Fresno if someone is willing. The Crest seems to be getting some decent acts lately as well. Ice Cube, Pennywise. What other non large arena type bands like Modest Mouse would people want to see here? Maybe if we post it here some promoters may see it and run with it. I would like to see Albert Hammond Jr., Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Sigur Ros, etc.

Sir Lancelot Higgins...I think 80% of your wish list or better will be at Coachella...for what that's worth. We can post all the bands we want, but I don't think it will make much of a difference - too many logistics to overcome to be able to book mid-level shows and still make money in Fresno. If Modest Mouse will be $30 at The Fox then we're looking at $35 or $40 at most Fresno venues that could even dream of supporting that show. People will struggle to pay that, especially on any kind of a regular basis in this economy. But - as long as we are dreaming - would have loved to have seen Kings of Leon and We Are Scientists when they toured together recently.

Feels good to live in visalia. When you make it to visalia Tune into 94.1 Lowpower FM It will remind you why corporate radio sucks joggernuts

...this is kind of bizarre.
-on the one hand, we get (most of) YES up at some gaming casino (okay, they have a canadian coverband guy handling the lyrics and Wakeman's son on keyboards, --but it's still YES,) -less than an hour away.
-But pulling in someone like Sigur Ros (who I'd give a right arm to see,) -locally- is seen as a pipedream...
-Truthfully, it could work, because people who love Yes (and were raised with them,) do/would go nuts over Sigur Rios, (if they knew who they were.)
-THAT could work.

I saw MM at the Rainbow in 2005 and I just bought my ticket for the show in Visalia.
DChild, your negativity is part of the problem.
The hyperbole of claiming that there are too many logistics is just silly. Like it's been said before, Fresno just needs people to step up and be like Aaron Gomes.

My wife got tickets for us. I'm excited. Never seen them live. But I've been a fan since 2002.
It'll be fun spending the evening in DT Visalia.
Posted by: Kiel at January 29, 2009 12:33 PM
Adam, I'd love to think that anything I do has that much of an impact on Fresno, but if you like to use the word silly then go ahead and slap that label on your own statement. For years I think I have been far more a part of any possible solutions than problems, as have others who have tried really hard to make "mid major" shows work here on a consistent basis.
At the end of the day, though, the right formula has eluded Fresno. It might start with an Aaron Gomes, but I am sure that even Aaron would be quick to point out that his success has not been singular - not to mention that most of his shows are smaller than what most of us are talking about.
There are a lot of elements in Visalia that make it all work, and I'm just pointing out that Fresno isn't close yet. Believe me, I wish it were and hope that it gets there.

show some modesty! hehe, from someone who grew up in visalia, went to mt. whitney high then transferred sr. yr to a fresno school, then bck.
i can say i know a sh**load of fresnofolk, and visafolk that are gonna be downtown this mon. solely for the music.
-tis the music that brings us together-
but visalia does have a reggae station, PV!94.1.. fresno cant speak on that topic hehe
