Best chicken wings in Fresno?
Last night I was hungry and in the mood for gross, greasy, appetizer-like food. So I went to Applebee's.
Look, I'm not proud. But I was starving and wanted boneless buffalo wings immediately. Feeling disgusted with myself today, I decided there has to be a better way to get good wings quickly, so I Googled "Fresno's best chicken wings" and found a web site called Wild for Wings, which lists the best chicken wing places in various cities according to certain criteria.
I'll tell you what, friends: Fresno's list? SUCKS. Deal with this nonsense for a minute:
Best Overall: Hooter's
Hottest Wings: Hooter's
Biggest Wings: Hooter's
Best Flavor: Hooter's
Best Value: Hooter's
Best Beer Selection: Hooter's
Best Service: Hooter's
Best Veggie Dips: Hooter's
Best Atmosphere: Hooter's
No, no, NO. I have no problem with Hooter's as an establishment (who doesn't like t*ts, right?). My problem with Hooter's sweeping these categories is based solely on the fact that their wings are awful. Like, Applebee's awful.
Redo that list for me in the comments section, would you? I need some good wings suggestions.

Comments:
Ever since 'Wings' went out of business (it was in Riverpark) I have felt lost when deciding where to satisfy a wing craving. I'm looking forward to seeing some responses to your question.

I tried to think about the last GREAT batch of wings I had...they were not in Fresno. I need the Beehive to come through on this one. I really haven't thought about wings in some time, but now I'm jonesin for the delicious goodness...

I'm partial to buffalo-style typically, but Wings definitely had an impressive variety of flavors going for them.

I wasn't aware that people ate wings anyplace other than Hooters/and/or a drunk friend's Super Bowl party.
There's some chicken wings in the vending machine here at work, but the best thing you can say for them is they might actually be chicken.
Applebee's = no, never
Hooters + kids birthday party balloons = no
Maybe Red Robin?
Heather have you stumped the blog masses?

man, UNIVERSITY CHICKEN had out-of-this-world wings. That place was like heaven. I've never had anything like it before or since. It was right across from the Save Mart Center but apparently they didn't pay their bills AND University Chicken, a small franchise of three restaurants, apparently stole the recipe and closed shop.
They also had some badass microbrews and you could order a GALLON of beer.
But the wings. Oh man the sauce was incredible. And they put it on other stuff too, like Fries, and nachos, and sandwiches.
It was the spiciest stuff ever, even on the low levels. I can't find anything close to that, anywhere. And it wasn't just spicy, it was incredible!
I actually like the Applebee's Boneless Buffalo wings when I'm forced to go there because someone gives me a giftcard or someone else is paying. They're not great but they count, I guess.
But ever since the Chicken closed (and it didn't last long), I haven't really bothered with wings.

The Santa Fe Basque has great Chicken Wings. That's really the only place that sticks out it my mind.

As odd as it is to say this, perhaps the best buffalo wings in town are at a mexican spot -- Acapulco. Not the best I ever had (not even close), but pretty good.

As far as chain restaurants go, Claim Jumper's wings don't suck. The nice thing about that place is their Happy Hour goes until 7, so there are deals on drinks and wings fairly late(r).

Thanks for the blog H-Mac. Now im craving happy hour after work. Beer and Wings. Hmmmm

home made. Make them yourselves, make them the way you want them. That is the best way.

i've come to resort to the frozen wings/legs from costco with a side of frito lay ranch dip alla the chip section of the supermarket and some hot sauce... faster, and better, than anywhere i've found in fresno but i'm open to suggestions

It's funny this discussion is coming up now. I went home to the Midwest and had some excellent boneless wings. Now I'm on a mission, and I mentioned it on Twitter and someone laughed at me last week saying they didn't think Fresno was the mecca of wings.
I live right down the street from where University Chicken was, but I don't know if they had boneless. I wasn't on a kick yet. And I will only eat boneless, so Crapplebee's has to serve until someone can point me to non-grocery store, non-vending machine and non-Hooter's wings.

Joe Moore brought up a good question when discussing wings...what about Hero's downtown? Anybody sample their offering?
Posted by: Travis Sheridan at January 12, 2009 3:26 PM
I'm trying NOT to eat wings because our band is going to AGT Jan 30th and 31st(hint hint).. buuuuuuttt....
University Chicken had my fav.
Now every Sunday at the chicken n' waffle place next to Thaiphoon.

I don't eat chicken wings - don't like the bones - but my husband seems to like the ones at B.C.'s Pizza in Clovis.
Posted by: Kathy at January 12, 2009 3:51 PM
yep BC's pizza in clovis has pretty good ones.
Posted by: kevikev at January 12, 2009 4:17 PM
Man I went to BC's for the first time and it's like some lame pizza place stopped at Whole Foods and grabbed a bunch of beer.
Everything we asked for they didn't know if they had or ran out of. Totally lame! I thought they were supposed to have like 100 beers! Then the beer I got was in a 22 oz bottle. I didn't plan to have that much of 7.5% alc. by volume, so it's a good thing a friend drove me back! I could have gotten the bottle at the supermarket and a $5 pizza at little caesars!

The bowling alley on Blackstone & Sierra. Try em, you won't be disappointed
Posted by: Mitch at January 12, 2009 8:08 PM
MeNEd's is the beholder of the best hot wings... in the valley that is. You won't knock 'em if you try 'em.
Posted by: Anthony at January 13, 2009 2:55 AM
man, I thought hot wings were like something people brought home from the grocery store deli for parties and stuff.
I did have Hooter's hotwings once--they were offered free (we were doing a Toys4Tots gig out in their parking lot)--they were ok, but not so much better than the ones you get at the grocery store.
I think I'll be at Heros tonight, so I should try theirs.

HIS magazine had a big article last year about all the best places to get wings in fresno, it was a pretty big list
Posted by: dave at January 13, 2009 8:32 AM
"H",
I've got your place but I'm not going to share over the airwaves at this moment; if you're down to make a covert run on the join later on today, I'll spring for our meals. Hmmm... that was odd.
Ahhh, don't reject me over the internet either (HA)!
Posted by: Mr. Incognito at January 13, 2009 9:25 AM
@Kathy/Kev: I went to BC's for the "Ghost Hunters" party in November -- it's a cute place, but one hell of a long drive from where I live (surface streets all the way). If you say the wings are good, though, I'd be willing to make the commute out there.
@Mitch: Sierra Lanes? Interesting. Diamond Billiards, which is next door to Sierra Lanes, puts nacho cheese on French fries. Glorious, but a conversation for another post.
@Anthony: The ones at Victory Grill are okay, but for some reason the Coney Island wings are the suck.
@Dave: I don't read HIS. Do you remember any of their suggestions?
@Mr. I: I would never reject you. I will, however, take a raincheck.
Posted by: Heather at January 13, 2009 10:19 AM
i vote Hooters
Posted by: will at January 13, 2009 4:54 PM
Will, you understand we're talking about chicken, not boobs. Right?
When I do a Best Boobs in Fresno post, you can lead the Hooter's parade.

@HMAC, yes I do, its the HIS magazine from September /october a couple of years ago. This is what they came up with for best wings in Fresno:
1. Hooters
2. Logans Roadhouse
3. BJ's restaurant
4. Claim Jumpers
5. Applebees (North Palm location)
6. Chilis (North Fresno Street location)
7. Tony Romas (west bullard)
8. Wings on North Blackstone (closed)
9. dog house grill
10. harleys grill and bar (closed)
11. world sports cafe
(rated by a "wingometer" scale from highest to lowest)

I would think little units of bone, gristle, and skin hardly qualify as a food stuff. Do those things actually have any meat on them? Personally, they seem about as appetizing as Angelina Jolie's arms (which also frighten me).
If I want greasy and appetizing, I'm more of an onion rings kind of guy...
