Beehive Obsessions: Volume 6

You know how it is when you find something you love and instantly you want everyone you know to love it, too? Here is a list of things the Beehive is into at this very moment. We invite you to share your obsession in the comments.

lost.jpg

Heather: My current obsession is sitting in front of the computer every Thursday morning with a giant cup of coffee (or three), reading "Lost" recaps. Watching the show is nice, but I don't really understand what the hell I've seen until someone explains it to me in patient detail. I like Entertainment Weekly's recap because it's pretty comprehensive, but I also like to read Best Week Ever's recap for the humor. Also hilarious are the "Totally Lost" videos EW's Doc Jensen does -- they're funny enough to make you forget that you're a dweeb for watching them in the first place.

Mike Oz: OK, so my obsession is kinda lame. Are you ready for this? Solitaire. For some reason I downloaded a solitaire app on my iPhone last week and since then I've done nothing but try to get all those stupid cards in their stupid stacks, separated by suit, in the right order. It's actually quite hard. Harder than the version that comes with every PC. I guess the cool thing about playing solitaire all the time is that I can say I'm referencing that one computer in each episode of The Office" that has solitaire open.

Felicia: I've never been a regular cell phone user (wouldn't even turn it on most of the time), but I'm obsessed with my new Samsung Propel. (BTW, it's the one featured in the ad with a mumbling Ozzy Osbourne texting people because no one understands him.) I didn't want to go the whole hog smartphone route. Just wanted something to make texting easier with a full keyboard. But now I'm exploring all its features, like taking photos and texting them to folks (which I never did with my previous cell phones). And I have my phone on all the time now. Next up: Downloading music.

Will: Facebook ... finally. Still not sure how all those apps work, and I'm not sure I wanna know. But more and more of my old friends keep popping up there, so I find my time being spent on the site more than MySpace now. It's got a bunch of neat, little features that keep me interested, such as the super-easy chat function and the somewhat-creepy-yet-totally-helpful People You May Know rotator. Not to mention the running scroll of everything my people are up to and what they've posted. One beef, though, is I'm not sure I want non-friends to know my business. I made my profile private (sorry, for personal use only), but I get the impression people can still see what I'm doing because I'm learning all sorts of TMI about other "private" (or rather, outside-my-network) people. This uneasiness is preventing me from what I expect would be fully enjoying the Facebook experience. So I'm still wading through it.

Donald: I'm obsessed with the unabridged audio-book version of one of my favorite books: Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale." I make it a habit to reread this sumptuous, lyrical, astoundingly literate 1983 novel -- written in an addictive magical-realism style about a New York City at the turn of the millennium that's a shade different from the real thing -- at least every couple of years. This time, I'm listening to it. All 22 CDs worth. It's going to take me a couple of months to get through this lengthy novel, but the experience of having it read aloud to me is opening my ears to new things to adore.

Rick: I am currently obsessed with 3-D. I really saw how well it could work in "My Bloody Valentine 3-D." The new film "Coraline" uses it well in several spots. There's also going to be a commercial during the Super Bowl for the new Dreamworks' movie "Monsters vs. Aliens." Also there's an upcoming episode of "Chuck" in 3-D -- a case where the technology just didn't work. This is the most 3-D in decades.

Kathy: My obsession is Genius on iTunes. Love it. I will never again spend hours wading through thousands of songs on my computer to create a play list. All I do is think of one song I like and ask the Genius to make me a mix. It's masterful. No lame songs. It doesn't just pick songs from the same genre or artist, it finds songs that have the same mood, themes, etc. How does it know? I have no idea, but I imagine some data input clerk had to spend a whole lot of time entering song lyrics and stats for the programming nerds. The results are magical (and save me a whole lot of time when updating my iPod). I find myself selecting wacky songs just to see what Genius will do. I doesn't disappoint. Apple is A-mazing!

Your turn. What is your obsession?

I wonder how long I can go without using the word "app" (this doesn't count!). I hope it's forever.

Kathy, does Genius pick from among the songs you already have, or does it suggest ones for you to buy? For some reason I was under the impression it was the latter. Now I'll have to try it out!

It does both Donald. If you select a song from your library it will create a play list from what you have. But, if you select a song at the iTunes store, it will give you a list of songs you might like.

Right now, I'm pretty obsessed with this girl named Lauren Grant.

That's so easy:

DEXTER!!!

I've been a long-time aficionado for the CSI's (one pet cat's name is Horatio!) which likely stems from watching Quincy M.E. reruns during my formative years, but once I started watching Dexter, the rest of the shows are just filler until Dex is back!

I'm hyperventalating until the next season begins...Jebus! when WILL that be, September?

DANGIT!

@Mike Oz: Is there an app for that?

My obsessions are facebook, and of course the beehive! The genius app is pretty cool, especially when you have over 30,000 songs to choose from!

there's a growing group at the Starline Grill that's become obsessed with CASH CAB on the Discovery Channel. After 2 hours of that we watch Jeopardy and then relinquish the remote to other mindless shows :)

Right now top of the list is watching, marveling at, staring at my baby...
Then the very next is my girl Corazon...
Then it's coffee up in this mug...fresh style...
Then it's alcohol, beer, wine, spirit form(JW Black Label)
I have a long list but these are tops...

@Heather: There are apps that make fart noises, but I'm not sure if there's one that makes annoying people shut up.

I have 3. Dexter, The Tudors and Twitter. I find myself twittering about them at times.

@ReneeN: Not only did you beat me to the post, but you totally outed us as well!

Cash Cab, baby!

@Mike Oz: Did you come up with that insult yourself, or does your phone tell you what to say now, too?

Since someone already mentioned Cash Cab, I'll go with Family Feud. It's on that weird ION network for an hour block weeknights at 7pm. I'm not too crazy about the current host, Mr. Peterman from Seinfeld (no one compares to the late great Ray Combs IMO), but there's something about a show that has you shouting at the tv while you watch. It's a wonder why I ever stopped watching.

Up until recently I was obsessed with the Beehive...really gang, it's not you it's me...

Now I am obsessed with updating my stupid Facebookstatus via video...

I am also mildly obsessed with my Flip camera...I am keeping busy with my video blog (aka vlog)...I gotta keep adding content or Heather will call me out!!!!

I'm obsessing over mixing. I'm finishing a recording project (part of the Rogue show I'm in) and it's in the 'mixing the various tracks' stage.
It's not the *fun* kind of obsesssion (things like a tv show you're into at the moment), it's sort of a painful obsession. Mix for a few hours ,go to bed, wake up, play the music on a few different players (boom box, stereo, whatever) then think....'shoot, is the bass too loud?'---and then repeat the process. grrrrr.

The fun part comes when (if) you've got a pile o' songs and you're relatively proud of how they sound. Hope that part comes real quick!

I'm obsessed with Family Guy. It's on TBS, Cartoon Network, Channel 53. It's pretty much all I watch in the afternoon/evening.

To Famous: I'm really excited to find another Haruki Murakami fan. I love his books. "A Wild Sheep Chase" still blows my mind.

The return of "Life on Mars". A friend loaned me all the episodes from the original British version. I'm actually impressed with how the American version is stretching it concept-wise.

i'm a bit obsessed with podcasting. we've done one each of the last three weeks, although one got deleted on accident and never made it onto the internets. if i could, i'd do more than one a week.

i'm also really excited that lost is back.

Right now:
Fish tycoon app on iPhone.
Americas Best Dance Crew (team quest is my fav.)
Facebook- Food fling is oddly fun.
Finding useless apps in the app store.
Seeing how long i can go without logging into my myspace, hence the facebook love.
Sex and the city on DVD. I started watching the series in the summer, but stopped and just picked up again. super good show!

My human has alway had ocd....he's better since medication and therapy, but sometimes I catch him doing the "As Good As It Gets" walk routine, or checking the door to make sure it's locked...I don't think he'll get over the "touch the fence or wall while walking" so I try to make him walk in the park but Buddy's no help as he likes to check out things in stores or other canines behind fences....as for entertainment & media, I know he's obsessed with "The Office", "Life On Mars", and infomercials.....but the latter may be due to his inability to sleep at night......oh, I'm obsessed with "The Beehive" because it is a great outlet for my creative writing ability....but keep that quiet as my human has the grad school degree due in part to it....um Mr. Oz, thai overweight "iPod" that you so love, too bad you can't use it as a phone as well.....but then, maybe ATT will have an "app" for that oversight someday......sorry but the truth hurts, and you'll see it when you're in the many "dead zones" of, well, just about anywhere in the world!
Sasha.......Mike, can you hear us now? I didn't think so!

I have 3 obsessions: 1)Beehive-I was a blogging virgin until I found Beehive about a month ago. 2)Reading-I read at least 3 books at once, one trashy, one self help, and one classic. 3)True Blood-Cannot wait for new season to begin...would love for vampire Bill to bite me.

I admit I'm slow on the whole TV thing so you all may think i'm a little late on this but my new obsession is WIPE OUT! That show is genius and I wanna be on it.

I also just allowed myself to watch the mindless MMA/UFC nonsense this weekend and instantly fell in love.
Who would've thought I'd be drawn to grown men groping one another in an obvious homo-erotic manner while beating each other senseless!?

Posted by: MsJoey at February 2, 2009 9:28 AM

*****

@MsJoey: MMA homo-erotic? I don't think so!!! Two dudes or two broads kicking the sh*t out of each other is brutal, not sexy. There's some serious strategic moves going on in an MMA bout. I'm totally obsessed with MMA. I got to see Frank Shamrock fight Cung Le in EliteXC. It was so exciting! Best part was having my husband, a former wrestler, explain to me what's an arm bar, a kimura, and other techniques. Also on that fight card was local MMA rising star, Billy Evangelista. That was awesome to see a Parlier native fighting at the HP Pavilion. MMA demands respect! Okay, I'll step off my soap box now.
