arrow What are you doing to celebrate Mike Oz day?

mikeozfresnoday.jpg

Did you know Dec. 18 is Mike Oz day in the City of Fresno? Technically, it was Dec. 18, 2006 but I never found out until this past January. So today, I'm celebrating.

Necessary backstory: In Dec. 2006, I was selected for the first-ever "You Got It" award from the Fresno Chamber of Commerce's Image Fresno coalition, basically because I "get" Fresno and I'm an advocate for the city. It was good times -- I actually got to eat at the Downtown Club. I felt mighty special.

Last December, the award went to John Alkire, the CEO of the Big Fresno Fair. During his luncheon, he was given a proclamation from the city that included his own day. At the ceremony, I was told they were going to give me a day too -- retroactively. Awe-some!

I had forgotten all about this by the time I received -- a month and a half later, dropped off in a plastic Wal-Mart bag -- a proclamation from the city naming Dec. 18, 2006 "Michael Osegueda Day."

I had to wait 11 long months for my day to come back around and I almost forgot about it again. I probably would have if not for this year's winner being my colleague/homie Joan Obra, The Bee's food writer. She'll get her "You Got It" dues this evening. Maybe we'll end up sharing Dec. 18, who knows.

For now: I'm getting tacos in honor of myself. The Official Mike Oz Day Ceremony will happen at La Elegante in downtown Fresno around lunchtime. For those of you looking to celebrate on your own, here's what I recommend: Support a local business today. Get your lunch at a Mom-and-Pop Fresno spot. Or your dinner. Skip Starbucks and go to your nearest local coffee house. Or buy something at a locally-owned shop. Show Fresno that you get it too.

This is by far one of my favorite Mike Oz stories -- I'm glad it finally made its way to the blog. There is no part of this story that isn't fan-Fresno-tastic, from giving you a day in your honor a year too late to the Walmart bag delivery.

Keep it klassy, City of Fresno.

You should get a free pass to do something in the city when one gets bestowed this honor. Like ride the FAX all day for free or get a police escort all day or something like that...that'd be awesome!

I was planning to eat at a local Taquería today... but this will make it even more celebatory!

Now to decide on the one at Shields & Fruit or at the old Drug Fair.

A Big Congrats Mike!

If you're talking El Ranchito on Sheilds/Fruit, that place is bomb. Go there.

What's a brother got to do to get his own day? I totally "get it," and I don't have my own day. And doesn't Famous Whitewater day sound cool?

Although, Suzanne totally says she'll share her day with me. Thanks Suzanne.

All jokes aside, Mike "gets it" more than most Fresnans and totally deserves whatever it is the city wants to give him. (Mike, you should ask for a golden key).

I predict that the next step for Mike Oz will be: a cameo on "The Office."

@adam: Probably around 12:45 ... give a take a few minutes. Trying to avoid the lunch rush.

This certainly was not a plea for someone to buy me lunch. That said, I'll take it. It's a recession!

I GET that Mike Oz is an awesome asset for Fresno. Enjoy your day and thanks for getting me out of work.

No plea assumed. But yeah, no one should have to buy their own lunch on their day. I'll see you there.

Those tacos sure sound a lot better than the frozen burrito packed in my lunch bag.

Congratulations!!! YOU are a super-FRESNAN!
I totally get that you get it. Does that mean I can have an hour in my honor?
Man Elegante sounds soo good.
But I already got my lunch from Geno's so I did my part stimulating the local economy!

This is sooo awesome! Enjoy your day, Mike!

I tried to find out what was going on in the world on December 18, 2006...not too much, but it was the busiest day in FedEx's history: http://news.van.fedex.com/intl/it?node=5144

Not very cool...but Mike Oz Day changed all that!!!

...born in 'Jersey,
fam. in 'Jersey,
headed there for the Holidays...

...so Mike Oz day is also 'Jersey day... cool, I can save money on paper hats and toy horns, (just need to magic marker a few things in, and we're good to go.)

(I didn't even know New Jersey even HAD a day, I don't think NEW JERSEY knew either... (we shred a lot of memo's ahead of time.)

I like Mike, I like 'Jersey... I'll make a few calls... (I don't see this as a problem...)

Good job Mike! You are an asset to the local scene.

I will go having a spicy meatball sub from Sam's Italian deli in your honor! And maybe listen to an artist on your top 10 album list. Maybe I'll root for SJSU to beat Fresno State in hoops, uhmm well that kind of goes against the Fresno advocacy.. scratch that one...

Huge props to Mike on this. Dude seriously deserves a week, not a day for all the stuff he's done/doing for Fresno.

Though I did hear Fresno tried naming a street after him, but had to change it back after people kept dying while in the cross walk. You see, no one crosses Mike Oz.

Update... Marcel and I chose the Shields/Fruit option.

(I still have leftovers in the fridge. Those rellenos are HUMONGOUS! And he took home half of his gargantuan quesadilla.)

Yay local Fresno food!

NOW... everybody go out and do your last minute Christmas shopping at local merchants and try to avoid the big box stores. K?

Congrats Mr. Oz! You deserve the kudos!

(Sorry I'm a day late, I was down in the LA area. I DID buy my lunch from a local in the area. If
you're ever in the South Bay/Torrance area, check out Alpine Village--it's a German shopping center....the place ain't super thriving, but the grocery store that includes a butcher counter and bakery is always busy. Yeah, so if you ever need a change from your beloved tacos and wanna try *real* liverwurst [not that Farmer John's junk in the Super Market] on some down-home rye bread, check where the 405 meets the Harbor Freeway on Torrance Blvd.--across the street from where the Goodyear Blimp calls home.)
p.s. I realize the mention of liverwurst is not immediately appealing to all, but you may be surprised at
it's wonderful-ness. Or try one of the zillions of other 'wursts' they got going on down there.
