Is anyone 'calling in gay' on Wednesday?
In response to California's Proposition 8, as well as similar anti-gay ballot measures in other states, activists are reacting "with anger, with resolve, and with courage" ... by not showing up to work. First, there was Prop. 8 - The Musical, now there's "Day Without a Gay."
Locally, Queer Fresno and Gay Fresno have compiled a listing of multiple events scheduled throughout the day.

Comments:
Did I miss something? Was there a ballot initiative to kick illegal gays out of the state? I wasn't aware they had a home country. I look forward to visiting it.

Stop giving these attention getters their hayday......If they don't go to work, fire their gay, happy rears and give the job to somebody that wants to work and support of a Family. Many would love to have a paycheck, and not be a specticle. This is starting to get disgusting.

clavius,
is it only alright to protest if someone is kicking you out of a state? i guess that martin luther king, jr fellow should've just accepted discrimination because he wasn't an illegal being kicked out of his state/nation.

I'm not (cause I'm not gay), but unlike Clavius (what is this, Rome?) and Janie (who likes to capitalize family for some reason), the gay community has my support. I could go on a religious right rant, but I won't. Only cause it fuels their hate filled fire.
The only thing that is disgusting is the hate being spread.

I am all for a "gay decade"
OR
A gay go away forever day.

Sweet, the bigots have arrived. *cracking knuckles* Let's get this comment war on.
Janie, what about fighting for equal rights is disgusting?
Bob, yeah? Where would you like them to go away forever? Is that elimininationist rhetoric I'm hearing? Want to exterminate some people?

I support same-sex marriage. I loved the debate between Jon Stewart and Mike Huckabee on the topic last night.
However, I do not support 'Call in Gay day.' I don't think it will have any decent effect (save slight revenge) on the Prop 8 debate.
I don't think there's a question that gay folks exist. I don't think there's a question that they affect our society and our economy. There's not really anything to prove there. (Heck, without gay people, there would be NO weddings! I mean, who would be the consultants? Provide the flowers? Catering??!?)
Mike Huckabee said in 30 states the ballots to uphold traditional marriage was upheld by 68% of the voters, on average. He said supporters of same sex marriage would have their work cut out for them to try and convince voters to change their minds.
Were that the actual case, then maybe protest marches and 'call in gay' days might be helpful. However, in my opinion, changing the voters' minds is NOT the goal. It would be like trying to change the voters' minds who were against women's suffrage and civil rights for black people.
Those things were never voted FOR. The courts and constitution simply made those things happen. Voters didn't decide segregation would be a good idea...who doesn't remember the picture of that little girl going to a white school surrounded by National Guardsmen? The voters were PISSED when all of the above things were validated by the Supreme court.
But now segregation and equality is accepted. Women's votes are courted. No one bats an eye (publicly) when different races choose to marry.
And granted, while protests seemed to help publicize the causes back in those days, I just don't see a similarity in these days...maybe it is important to 'call in gay,' but only to those who are actually calling in gay.
To me, only three things will really help the cause: 1, those who are gay need to come out and not be scared anymore (hear me Kevin Spacey?!?). There are statistically 40,000 glbt people in Fresno, but due to the conservative nature of the city, I'll bet only 10,000 are out.
2, the cause needs money for lobbyists and lawyers. This thing will be solved in the legislature and courts. TV ads aren't the answer. "No on 8" was cool, tho, cuz it got young people involved in the process and helped to educate those who might not have understood the proposition or the debate.
And 3, any glbt people who are pursuing thier own skewed plan of action need to stop. It just hurts the campaign. I'm speaking to those mad dolts who are sending hatemails and death threats to our Mayor and Pastor Franklin. Look, I don't like their actions either, but these are human beings with families, and no one deserves to have their lives threatened. I hope the FBI catches those evil people making the threats and punishes them for their actions.
Same sex marriage is going to be law soon, people. Might as well get used to it now...or risk being embarassed at your highly publicized photos throwing rocks or yelling at the little girl just trying to go to school...or the black man trying to marry the white woman...or the woman trying to vote...
And Bob? A 'gay go away forever day?' Nice. What a wonderful accepting person you are...same for Janie, the queen of spelling. I hope your Family doesn't turn out the same spiteful and unaccepting way you did.

Illegals immigrants, homosexuals...yes, I CAN live without them all!

You know what I can live without? Bigots. Now shut up already. No on likes you.
Posted by: Michael at December 10, 2008 12:30 PM
Interesting, it appears you managed to live with them as well. You're certainly alive and well enough to type at a computer.

Good come back, Michael!
That was the best so far!

Ed,
Methinks you take me too seriously.
While the day without a Mexican made sense due to the fact that the issue was whether or not to allow our neighbors to the south to immigrate legally/illegally. The issue protested here is in regards to marriage. By not allowing same sex marriage we're not kicking gays/lesbians out of the state. So, protesting by showing us what it would be like to not have any gays/lesbians in the workforce doesn't make any sense.
And about the Gay homeland....I was serious about wanting to visit. I'm sure it's lovely.

Though I, grudingly, agree with Stephen I will say that I think something like "Call in Gay" is good for the soul. No one likes to sit around and wait for things to just happen, they like to feel as if they're doing SOMETHING... ANYthing to at least move it along. Kind of like taking the side street to avoid the train and then coming back to realize that you're driving behind the car you were behind before the train. Sure you could have just waited for the train to pass.... buy why wait when you can move?
