Fresno Falcons hockey team shuts down
It's a sad day for Fresno Mike Seay. One of the area's minor-league sports franchises will cease to exist at the end of the day. In honor of all seven games I attended (and $63 in parking fees), here's a video of me dancing and NOT getting on the jumbotron:

No!

@jesse: i know, right? i mean, it's a travesty i didn't make the jumbotron. i'll tell ya, my wife's best friend's four-year-old twin daughters think im a great dancer.

i wish i had your moves will. that was a great job man. so full of life and fun!!

@will It is brutal you didn't make it. I've saw your moves at Sudz in the City one year and I am still in awe...
It is a sad day for Fresno. As a resident of downtown it was great to have the Falcons within walking distance. Also, not paying for parking was great! So much for stopping at the Shepherds Inn for a couple of drinks then some hockey.
On a side note, I guess its why they didn't start construction on the retail / housing where the parking lot is.
Posted by: Jesse at December 22, 2008 1:50 PM
Even after that they're shutting down the franchise?!
Posted by: marcel at December 22, 2008 1:51 PM
So sad! Too bad! What about those who had season tickets? Is KSEE Channel 24 biting the dust too?
Posted by: Charlie Taliaferro at December 22, 2008 1:52 PM
So what does this mean for the Legacy Project, and the whole idea of Kern Street as a sports walk.
I'm guessing it's a bigger burden on the first -- but I'm sure it doesn't help the image they're trying to build of downtown as a sports stop.
With this, it's been quite a couple weeks for Fresno failures -- Cabo Wabo and Gottschalks included.

Ouch.
And it's all my fault.
I'm one of 'those' who really liked the Falcons, followed their progress only a bit, and attended maybe one game a year.
Way to support your local team, Steph.
Dangit. My bad. (and all the other folks who talked a good game about liking the Falcons but didn't follow through with the much-needed dollars).
This one kinda hurts, tho...Cabo didn't even sting a teensy bit. Gottschalks isn't exactly dead-dead, but if so, it is kinda weird to see it go. But the Falcons were distinctly 'Fresno,' had built up nice rivalries, created some semi-stars, and is/was a truly exciting and worthwhile time, each and every game.
Shame my money isn't where my mouth is on this one. Me and the other 5,000 people who did the same thing.
Sorry, John Tull, you did a great job. Sorry partnered owners. You put on an amazing product. Sorry Coach. And sorry to Greg Spenrath, even tho you aren't with the team any more...just wanted to mention your name so I didn't get my a$$ kicked. Thanks for the years, Falcons (or as we all preferred, Al's special pronunciation, the Frezzino Falllicons!)

Wow, I think this is gonna be a hard time for 'idealists wishing to see progress' and 'just surviving' might be the order of the day--considering the "Economic Hard Times" we're going through.
I'm hoping it'll be like Summer in Fresno---Spring was nice to the plants and flowers and such...Summer is just a time to 'not die' and then Fall brings some more blooms.
C'mon Fall...hurry up!
I wonder if instead of transforming the world into a utopia of night-life-walking-traffic, whether the LocalArtsWorld will have to use their creativity just to do their part in helping us to hang on.
Posted by: blake at December 22, 2008 2:37 PM
Oh, and one more thing: Is THIS the Will Albritton with the moves who has to be positively DRAGGED to the dance floor? The same one?
Hm.
Posted by: Stephen at December 22, 2008 2:37 PM
@Will Feel free to dance at any of the Fresno State mens or women's basketball games and I'll make sure you get on the jumbotron. Heh heh.
Posted by: Bryan Harley at December 22, 2008 3:06 PM
Hey Will!!! You never danced at SCRG bouts!!!!
Thats the sole reason we retired!
I blame Will.
By the way, I offered to help with PR for the Falcons but they didnt take me up on it.
Okay I didnt really offer but I should have.

@jesse: oh dear. i was hoping nobody saw me at sudz.
@charlie: what's ksee channel 24?
@stephen: while youre accepting blame, can i pin the bucs' collapse on you, as well?
@blake: did wet towel bite you on the neck? scratch that. when are doing this bowling/burger thing?
@stephen: this video is the reason i stopped dancing.
@bryan: that's my man.
@joey: i didnt want to take away from the main attraction. plus, i didnt wanna get my a-- kicked just in case it didnt go over well. i've seen you guys brawl. and i dont want any part of that.

@wet: not to be missed is the cameo by my mother in law (aka the women who got scarfed) ... they came to visit from florida, and i took them to the hockey game.
i guess thats the true sign of the demise of a city. i mean, where am i to take out-of-town guests now?
Posted by: will at December 22, 2008 3:45 PM
Will, I can't believe they didn't put you on the big screen ... Elaine Benes has got nothing on you.
Posted by: felicia matlosz at December 22, 2008 3:53 PM
...and a lovely mother in law she is at that,
(you're a blessed man... If you want to see what your wife is going to look like in (ahem) years?
Consult wit-da-mamma... You're in for a happy middle-old age, oh hoofish one.)
Honestly?
Take 'em lotsa places...
When my mom was in town we went all over the place, and why none of them were as over the top as a hockey game (she's not a hockey game sort of girl,--but she does have her SCRG T.)
--There's stuff 'above' downtown to do,
stuff East, West, other cool towns to visit...
-whatever-
...stuff all over...
If downtown 'dies,' it will only do so for a little while,
-and then it will come back as something else, once folks realize that they have to do something to make the property pay... That's just the way it goes.
Meanwhile? sample all the other wunnerful Fresnish sights, sounds, and smells...

I like the woman sitting behind you who is so clearly over your s***.
Posted by: Heather at December 22, 2008 4:01 PM
@felicia: you got me. julia louis was indeed my inspiration for the fourth verse.
@heather: oh, she was totally like, who the h*** is this j***a**?

They didnt put you on the jumbotron and now they are titsup, go figure. I am from MN and grew up around hockey, I married and fresnan and we come back about 4 times a year ( we have a house in the No, South of Shaw too), fresno is a great town ( as much as you all hate to admit it), but hockey is not a fit here, baseball however is, hearing the idiots responsible for the falcons ( ok that was harsh sorry)are partners in the Grizzlies ( one of the best things going in Fresno), hopefully the albatross that was ( were?) the falcons dont bring down the Griz.

Very dissapointed in Fresno today. Bakersfield and Stockton now have something on us. How did we let this happen?
Posted by: The Fresnan at December 22, 2008 8:05 PM
Wow! This sucks for me. I ran into a friend at the Beehive B-Day Bash who said they might be looking for a video director. He was going to put in a good word. I hope I'm not responsible. I could have added hockey to the list of sports I have directed.
@ Will or anyone - If the Grizzlies ask me back to direct for a sixth season, I would be happy to put you on the big board. That is as long as your shirt remains on your body.

How sad.The economy has hit all of us badly.

That was AWESOME! Jumbotron is but a blip, you now have internet fame. May it go viral. :)
Posted by: Genevieve at December 23, 2008 1:59 PM
Wow the Falcon's website doesn't even exit anymore! It's gone...poof!
John Tull did a heck of a job and was a pleasure to work with. Wishing him and his staff a quick landing back on their feet very soon.
