arrow You should be watching "Mad Men"

About a year ago, I wrote a blog post titled "You Should Be Watching 'Dexter,'" Showtime's program about a serial killer with a heart of gold. I wrote that post because I believe 'Dexter' is a great show and really worth watching, but also because I love it and don't want it to be canceled.

So here I am again, taking it to the people on yet another show that I love and do not want to see canceled:

You guys should really be watching "Mad Men." Really.

CNN calls it "the most influential show almost nobody watches" and they're right. It seems like "Mad Men" is everywhere these days except on people's television sets. Case in point: "Mad Men" won the Emmy for Best Drama -- the first basic cable show to do so. It influenced Michael Kors' fall fashion collection. It was a category on "Jeopardy!" recently. And now "The Simpsons" annual Halloween special, which airs November 2, will feature a parody of the show, as well as the show's fabulous opening credits sequence:

Here are screen caps from "The Simpsons" (courtesy of Best Week Ever; click to enlarge):

So why would "The Simpsons" spoof a television program that fewer than 2 million people watch? Because it's a great show, and you really should be watching it. Really.

Look, "Mad Men" is on AMC Sunday nights at 10 p.m. The season two finale airs this Sunday, so get yourself to the video store your Netflix queue and start catching up before season three (seasons one and two are just 13 episodes each). If you can't do it for me, do it because the main character, Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm), looks like this, and there needs to be more of this on TV:

Right?

Thanks for the new desk top background photo. Pictures of kids? What kids??!!! I love John Hamm. LOVE him.

While I was off work this summer, I was able to watch the marathon of the first season of Mad Men and fell in love with it and him.

It really is a great show. Does help if you can watch the first season but easy enough to look online and figure out who is who and what they are doing and why.

A great show indeed and more people need to watch it! But something tells me it'll end up like Arrested Development, sadly....

This is the smartest show on TV. It makes me want to drink, smoke, and say inappropriate things at work...

WATCH THIS SHOW...

It is classy and stylish.

Good point, Travis: If you're trying to quit drinking, smoking, or calling your secretary "Sweetheart," this is NOT the show for you.

I'm close to being done with Season 1. Yes good show, but ...

The Wire > Mad Men.

I say this not to argue here, but to shake my finger at whoever picks Emmys and snubbed The Wire for five years.

Once again, something cool that i'm missing out on.
Sheesh. i really need to look thru the TV guide and start watching shows that feature handsome men in suits and ties.
One of the attorney's i work with calls me "Hot Stuff". Does that make me cool?

I know I don't need to reiterate this but I agree, "You should be watching Mad Men!" This is the best show I've seen in a long time. It's a great trip to the past with a plot so calculated it keeps you thinking about it days after you've watched an episode.

It will be a sad day if this show gets cancelled.

Thanks to Tiffany for introducing me to "Mad Men" and loaning me season 1 on DVD!

You're welcome. Anything I can do to spread the word about this awesome show.

Another 10-comment post for HMac. Damn she's good.

I'll have to borrow this from someone. Either that or I'll just do my usual thing and go buy it. Renting is for suckers.

But Entourage is on Sundays. Oh and renting isn't for suckers if it's from Redbox.

HMac--you've got superb taste--I just finished Netflixing the first seasons of both Dexter and Mad Men on your recommendation. Although, I am beginning to think that Jim Halpert may be a little too square to be my baby daddy.

Don Draper, Dick Whitman, whoever you are, you are delicious. And Dex, for a serial killer, you ain't too bad either.

Anybody else on the Weeds bandwagon? I'm enjoying that on Netflix right now as well!

partymarty,

That's what a 2-tuner DVR is for. Exactly why I have mine...Sunday nights at 7pm. Entourage = Mad Men
