Show of hands -- who actually thinks Frank Caliendo is funny?
Is there anyone more annoyingly unfunny than Frank Caliendo? I'm curious, because Caliendo is going into year two of topping my rankings.
Dane Cook is a close No. 2, but I have to go with Caliendo just for the amount of advertising I see for his "Frank TV" on TBS, which somehow was renewed for a second season that begins next week.
I get it, Frank, you do impressions. I get it, TBS, you have a show of Frank doing impressions. Do you guys really need to advertise every time there's a commercial break on your station? Do you really need to put the ads all over my MySpace page. Can this stop now?
Caliendo's equally annoying in his interviews. Case in point: This Q & A with our own Rick Bentley.
I bring all this up because Caliendo is performing tonight at Tachi Palace in Lemoore. I'm guessing some people from around here will be going to the show. For those people I have only one question: Why?

Comments:
At least Caliendo makes me laugh. Least now I know I'm not the only one annoyed by Cook. Dude sux
Posted by: Diablo at October 15, 2008 5:08 PM
I don't think he's that funny. He's funny, but not like laugh out loud funny. Maybe it's a matter of taste.
Who's really funny!? Cheech and freakin' Chong! Unless I'm high, I believe they are also going to perform at Tachi! Check out my blog post about that on my site over there.
BTW Thanks for joining lateupdate.com this week!

Yeah Dane Cook was funny the very first time I saw his routine, but I couldn't really sit through it a second time. I think he's funnier than this dude, but I need the guy to mellow out.
Posted by: Adrian at October 15, 2008 8:12 PM
I have a question. Why do people always go to other blogs and promote their own? It is really annoying. If I wanted to read your stuff I would go there.
Posted by: ... at October 15, 2008 9:55 PM
This post was worth an out-loud "HA!" Every time I see one of his ads (I've not seen the show), I turn to my wife and say, "I don't get it." And I still don't.
Posted by: Jody at October 16, 2008 7:53 AM
Caliendo used to be chuckle inducing. But now he's absolutely annoying.
Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 8:47 AM
Well if everyone already knew about my site, I would be happy to let them decide when they go over to it! But, in my case, and mikeoz can vouch for this, I'd only do it very rarely here. I want the hive crew or others to be the ones to mention my stuff, which is the harder task of being relevant that you would respect, and what I'd rather have happen.
On this post, I was seeing two points genuinely in response to this post that were legitimately worth mentioning -- thanking him for joining my site being the main one!
In general, and I don't like this either, but bloggers tell me that if you have a blog and you don't comment on other blogs, then people don't comment on your blogs -- a strange phenomenon that I hadn't known until recently. It's because Blogger A wants more comments, and Blogger B wants more comments, and so they sort of expect each other to help each other, and the logic is, "If you don't comment on my posts, then why should I comment on yours?" There's a fine line between promotion and sharing...
In short: It's out of bloggeraderie, Dot-dot-dot!
Posted by: Adrian at October 16, 2008 9:13 AM
Frank is painfully UN-funny. I purposely sat through an episode of FrankTV to see if the hype was founded on anything. It was an excruciating 1/2 hour to give up, but I watched till the end and even into the credits because I wanted to see what fools were involved in this dead whale of a show. Written by: Frank, Directed by: Frank, Produced by Frank.... oh... loud and clear.
BTW... read my blog. (lol)
Posted by: The Suppressors at October 16, 2008 9:41 AM
You're right, Caliendo sux too, he doesn't make me laugh, Shatner makes me laugh...
Posted by: Diablo at October 16, 2008 9:49 AM
Adrian has a good point. Anybody who has their own blog would recognize this. Of course, someone who can't even type in their own name might not be as witty. Something about anonymity when it comes to loud statments...well...makes my skin crawl....at least a fake name...come on.........
Back to the original blog.....This guy sucks....it's like...ok you can do Bush.......there are like a million of you out there.....
But Dane Cook is awesome....annoyingly awesome............and kinda hot!!!!!!!!!

God I hate this guy. I hated him when he had 5 minutes each week on Fox's football pregame show, impersonating John Madden. And I hate him now, with his stupid show. It's even more annoying that TBS seemingly has nothing else to promote than this show. What, did they finally cancel "My Boys?" Because if memory serves me right, during last year's baseball playoffs, "My Boys," was the show of choice. Of course the network always could just promote another airing of "Bloodsport" or "Iron Eagle III." Or go all-out and make light of their annual 24-hour marathon of "A Christmas Story." Because God knows we need another one of those genius marathons.
Posted by: Ben at October 16, 2008 10:03 AM
You had me, Ben, right up until you made fun of the 24-hour "A Christmas Story" marathon, which is pretty much the only reason I can get it up for that holiday anymore.
24 hours of A Christmas Story > the other 364 days in the year

if stirring the pot on a blog is what makes you smile in the morning, then you are a pathetic little man.
Posted by: mdub420 at October 16, 2008 10:29 AM
As a cast member (of Mad TV) he adds his impersonations for some added laughs. Granted he's developed many characters over the years & his input is just a small ingredient to the overall giggles on said TV show. However, as a stand alone venue, I don't think I could last 10-15 minutes until walking out looking for something else to do.
Posted by: Billy-Bob at October 16, 2008 11:02 AM
Show of hands -- who actually thinks Mike Oz is funny? Seriously, somebody must think Frank Caliendo is funny or else Fox or TBS or Dish Network wouldn't have been or still be putting him on TV as much as they do - it would be bad for their business. Just because your personal taste doesn't jive with someone else's doesn't mean your personal taste is more legitimate.
Posted by: Mike M. at October 16, 2008 11:05 AM
Yeah well...
Nice to assume that I am a man. And I got you to respond to my pathetic comment, didn't I?
Posted by: ... at October 16, 2008 11:07 AM
yeah i did respond to your comment because if i didn't, you would have took that shotgun and blew your brains out because nobody ever responds to your comments in the real world.
Posted by: mdub420 at October 16, 2008 11:11 AM
@mdub420: Sexist. ;)
@Mike M: *raises hand*
Mike was merely expressing his opinion on Frank Calliendo, not demanding that you find his opinion "more legitimate." It's okay for him to express his opinion, just as it's okay for you to respectfully disagree.
Posted by: Heather at October 16, 2008 11:14 AM
I think Mike Oz is funny sometimes, but that's not what's in dispute here. Last I checked, the title of the post wasn't "Show of hands -- who actually thinks Mike Oz is funny?" But you're welcome to start a Mike Oz hate blog I suppose. You can band together with all the people who hate HMac's posts making fun of celebrities. It'll be sucktastic.
Just because there are people who support something doesn't make them right, intelligent, or barometers of success. I mean, look at all the people who voted Bush into his second term.
Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 11:16 AM
BLOG WAR! Weeeeeeeeeeee.
Hey Mike Oz, what the hell?! My Fresno Bee was twenty minutes late yesterday - you suck.
Posted by: the fresnan at October 16, 2008 11:25 AM
Heather, "A Christmas Story," is a fine movie. But do we really need to have a marathon EVERY year? I guess it does beat the alternative: Showing the complete "Home Alone" series, or even one of Tim Allen's MANY Christmas movies. You know TBS has a thing for Tim Allen, another non-funny guy.
You know what would be a doozie? If TBS decided to have Frank Caliendo impersonate Santa Claus and make a movie of it. Genius!
Posted by: Ben at October 16, 2008 11:29 AM
Yes, Ben, every year, because Christmas is every year.
That movie is one of the best, if not THE best, Christmas movies ever. I like knowing that it's on for 24 hours, so there's no chance I'm going to miss it.
Posted by: Heather at October 16, 2008 11:32 AM
Heather, two words: Yule Log. TBS should throw in four to six hours of a burning yule log every year. That would solve the problem. Then I'd be happy.
Posted by: Ben at October 16, 2008 11:40 AM
A few things we should not do:
+ Knock the class movie, "A Christmas Story"
+ Make assumptions about Mr/s. Ellipses
+ Pick on bloggers! Ever heard the phrase, "Never pick on someone who buys ink by the barrel" before? The new phrase should be "Never pick on someone who posts blogs by the megabyte."
+ Deliver the Fresno Bee late to the Fresnan!
Posted by: Adrian at October 16, 2008 11:41 AM
I feel you on that one, Ben. But let's put it on Lifetime, or some other equally useless channel.

I have a better question:
Who actually thinks Heather's blogs are worthwhile?
Posted by: UFO at October 16, 2008 2:01 PM

Posted by: dave at October 16, 2008 2:34 PM
Regarding UFO's comment, I'm just gonna throw this pet peeve out there. The site is a blog, the original writings with authors are called posts, and the stuff we other people write after that are called comments.
Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 2:44 PM
The thing that is the most funny is how OZ and Heather are such haters of anyone who is more successful than them. Stop hating on people who are better looking, have more money, etc than you and give credit where credit is due. Oz's blog gets the most comments and views because it is pretty well done, and is just not hating on people 24/7. Heather's on the other hand, is usually just depressing to read because there is soooo much jealousy and envy it is pathetic. If a post hasn't ever received more than ten comments, please get a clue. Thank you from everyone.
Posted by: Aundrea at October 16, 2008 3:09 PM

Posted by: Michael at October 16, 2008 3:21 PM

Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 3:24 PM
Haha at Michael. Clicking the link to your blog was the worst choice ever!!!! 0 comments on every post???? That has to be a record. Why even blog if nobody reads your posts or leave comments???? But then again, "tales from the underbelly of darkness blah blah blah" or whatever your site said leaves much to be desired Robert Stack. BWHAHAHA.
Posted by: Aundrea at October 16, 2008 3:29 PM
So just so we're clear on all this, it is now fact that:
- Blogs posts with the most comments are the best.
- Movies that make the most money are the best.
- Albums that sell the most copies are the best.
- TV shows that have the highest ratings are the best.
Shout out to Beverly Hills Chihuahua and American Idol.
Posted by: Mike Oz at October 16, 2008 3:33 PM
Beverly Hills Chihuahua made like 18 million and was released in October. If you want to choose the top box office winner for 52 weeks a year then I guess you are totally right in cherry picking one example.
Oz, that comment is the funniest unintentionally funny comment ever. While trying to prove a point, think about what your comment is suggesting.
I guess the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Mariah Carey, any other artist who has sold tens of millions of albums totally suck right? I mean what do album sales have to do with success? I won't even talk about movies or tv shows. Hilarious.
Posted by: Aundrea at October 16, 2008 3:41 PM
Calinedo sucks because he does the same impressions everyone else does. If you're shtick is impressions, shouldn't you be more creative and be able to do some ones that no one else can do?
Pacino/Clinton/Shatner/Bush/Walken/De Niro, it's boring and old.
Please forgive the intrusion. Back to the BLOG WARRRR!
Posted by: the fresnan at October 16, 2008 3:47 PM
Um hello. Caliendo is the most well known for doing sports impressions like John Madden, Charles Barkley, Bill Walton etc. Madden is his most famous. Who else does impressions of the three people just mentioned?
Posted by: Aundrea at October 16, 2008 3:54 PM
"BWHAHAHA."
Do you have a handlebar moustache you twirl when you say that? Just curious.
Posted by: Michael at October 16, 2008 3:55 PM
Geez Fresnan, get out of the way.
Oh Aundrea, it's even funnier that you found unintentional comedy that didn't actually exist.
Mike is poking fun at the idea of absolutes and narrow definitions. In other words, having the most comments on a blog post does not necessarily make it the best, but selling tens of millions of records may indeed be an indicator of talent.
Quantifying isn't always the best way to go about rating something. Creed sure sold a lot of records, didn't they?
Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 3:56 PM
"Haha at Michael. Clicking the link to your blog was the worst choice ever!!!! 0 comments on every post???? That has to be a record. Why even blog if nobody reads your posts or leave comments???? Hey Aundrea, that seemed a little hate filled. You accused HMac of being a hater and then three posts down, you did the exact same thing you accused her of....Stop being such a copy cat and quit drinking HMac's haterade. She's better at it and way more eloquent than you.

A word of moderation here:
We at The Beehive are usually pretty lax about commenters coming after us as bloggers, but we draw the line when commenters start attacking each other personally.
That's started to happen on this post and I've deleted a few comments because of it.

hmac's blog posts get more than 10 comments, although just like oz, not all of them do.
mike's point on bev.hil.chi was that you can't just judge quality by comments/tickets sold/numbers.
other comedians do bill walton, charles barkely, & a ton of freakin comedians do john madden. and many do it better.
i don't like michael's blog. nothing against him, just not my interest. but, i also don't go on his blog and complain about his blog posts, call him a ufo hater, etc.

"And to the haters: keep hating. We appreciate the page hits and comment count."
? A quick scan of your blog reveals 20 viewable posts and exactly 1 with more than ten comments. Oz's blog gets more comments on one post than all of your posts combined on your whole blog. I wouldn't exactly bring attention to that to try to inflate your ego and sense of self worth. As far as page hits, if they were any more than 1/10 of Oz's, then why don't people leave comments? Something doesn't add up.
Posted by: Shannon at October 16, 2008 8:33 PM
We can't help it if you're an Oz fan Aundrea/Shannon. You're trolling and sock-puppeting his posts. Seriously, go start throwing down on someone else's post and I'm most certain that the comment count will drive up to combat the massive holes in your logic.
Posted by: adam at October 16, 2008 8:46 PM
Shannon/Aundrea/UFO/Jon B. (come on - we all know you're the same person):
the fact that you spend so much time thinking about me, and commenting about me, and worrying about what I'm up to, and taking the time to count how many comments I get -- why, that provides me with all the self-worth a person could want. Take the time to say more awesome things about me. I love it.
Posted by: Heather at October 16, 2008 8:51 PM
SHANNON, dont hate cuz she looks better than you
Posted by: dave at October 16, 2008 8:54 PM
? The fact that you spend so much time working on a blog which nobody reads or comments on is probably why you are unemployed. How is it that Oz can write a blog that is 1000x more popular than your blog and write for The Bee as well? Hmmmm? Now, what part of this comment isn't true? I would love to hear your flawed logic.
Posted by: Shannon at October 16, 2008 9:17 PM
"The thing that is the most funny is how OZ and Heather are such haters of anyone who is more successful than them. Stop hating on people who are better looking, have more money, etc than you and give credit where credit is due."
So NOT true. Heather is very very kind to and never puts down George Clooney. By the definition ( that I'm assuming you mean) of being more successful, richer, and better looking ( Sorry, Heather, you're cute and all, but you don't have the pornstache) Georgey boy is MUCH more successful than Heather.
Heather, Heather, Heather, Heather....

It's taken me half an hour to read through the comments here (though I skipped the post that anchors them, because I didn't think anything about Frank Caliendo was of interest). Here's what I've gleaned:
1) I didn't know Heather was fired from the Bee (sorry to hear that). But the fact that the Bee hired her to blog offers a glimmer of hope that they are trying to change.
2) I need to go see Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
3) I shall no longer link to any of my blogs, because A) it's annoying for bloggers to participate in online dialogue where they identify themselves, and B) I get no comments on any of mine (there are many).
4) All those posts Mike writes about what's going on in Fresno are actually his way of picking on people who are more successful than he is. (?)
5) Some people (a small, but vocal crowd) are mean. Some are ignorant. Evidently, some are both.
To the bloggers/writers/mothers/students/whoever in this comment thread that write for the benefit of others (whether it's your intent or not): thank you. You know who you are - and if you don't, I apologize for not linking to you, but it might annoy some of the other readers.

The unfortunate thing is that Frank Caliendo's people (TBS/Bob & Tom/Jim Rome(when he's not taking himself too seriously)/FOX's NFL Crew) are going to read this blog and think Frank is funny because his hate-blog generated so much attention.
To answer Mike's questions: I'm raise my hand..."Not funny, Frank. Not funny" (Caliendo poorly doing Bradshaw).
