arrow Rocky Horror: a Beehive survey

rockyposter2.jpgI'm in the middle of "Rocky Horror" fever as I prepare for next week's 7 story on the opening Oct. 31 of the stage musical at Severance Theatre. This Artists' Repertory Theatre production promises a contemporary twist on the 1970s era cult classic. For people of a certain age (including me), all you have to do is utter the words "Time warp" to get all nostalgic about the story of Brad, Janet and the "sweet transvestite" known as Frank N. Furter.

After talking around to people about the show, it seems that those in the 35ish age-range and up remember the movie well. (Some even remember the original Broadway musical upon which the 1975 movie was based.)

But I'm not sure if folks in their late teens and 20s are as familiar with "Rocky Horror." Do 20-somethings stare blankly at the mention of the Annual Transylvanian Convention and the planet Transsexual? Is a familiarity with the "Rocky Horror" canon strictly a generational thing? Or does a knowledge of the show extend to all ages?

For my story, I'd like to publish a sample of opinions from all ages. So let me know: How old are you (approximations are fine), and are you "Rocky" literate or not?

P.S. -- Isn't the original poster art for the show, pictured above, impressive?

Yeah, that's a great poster.

I'm 32, so the movie came out the year before I was born. In high school, after someone in my group introduced the rest of us to the movie, we all went crazy for "Rocky Horror" and spent way too much time doing the Time Warp in front of our friend's big screen TV.

Since then I've seen the movie on TV a couple of times -- it's harder to watch now for some reason. I bet a live performance would be fun, though.

i'm 26 and i have never seen the movie nor do i know anything about the storyline. in fact, up until recently, i always mixed this up with "little shop of horrors." i just found out yesterday that it's about an alien and outer space, but i have heard "time warp", and something about rain and popcorn, and interactive scenes more in the last few weeks than i ever have.

I'm 34 and I LOVE this movie. I think its a cult classic that permeates all ages and genres.
I miss going to Tower Theatre on Saturdays at midnight to watch it! I wish someone would start doing this again!
Oh and by the way, for those who are interested in a spin on this great movie, check out Deja Vu on Saturday, October 25 for their interpretation of this classic performed all in DRAG!
that was my plug for my son who'll be performing!

"It's just a jump to the left/ And then a step to the right/
With your hands on your hips/ You bring your knees in tight/
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane/
Let's do the Time Warp again!"

Did the film really come out in 1975? I didn't know that. I'm 32 and going to Rocky Horror was what us small-town kids did on the weekends in high school. We'd drive 25 minutes to "the city" (Rochester, NY) for the midnight showing and would dance the Time Warp in the aisles. So much fun.

I am 20, and i LOVE Rocky Horror Picture Show. I even have "Time Warp" and "Sweet Transvestite" on my iPods. I know i am younger than the target RHPS audience, but i saw it on VH1 one Halloween, it was an anniversary of the movie or something so it was ran all weekend. i watched it three times that weekend and have been hooked since. i tried to get my friends into it, but most of them didn't share my love of it. i wanted to go to a midnight showing a few years back to get into the audience participation aspect of the movie.

I only WISH I could remember all the lines to shout out. I'm going to purchase one of those readers with the script and then the lines to shout and memorize as much as I can.

I've seen a preview of 'Sweet Transvestite' by the ART cast, and it looks AMAZING! Lots of svelte beauties slinky dancing, GREAT vocals, and a rock band to beat all.

I for one (at age 45) cannot WAIT to see the show several times over. The guy playing Frank N Furter is new to me (someone named Daniel, he's also the director), but that's him on the poster and he looks amazing in person and can really sing the part.

Watching RHPS on TV is not much fun, but with a knowledgable crowd who knows when to squirt the guns and throw the rice, it's an awesome blast. I hope tons of people come out in costume...even tho I won't.

I am 22, and my folks (now in their late 50's) showed me the movie when I was in the Younger than 9.
In my junior year of high school, we did the timewarp at the first party of the year.
In addition, I actually own Shock Treatment, the sequel to Rocky Horror.

I saw the original stage production in London as an impressionable wide-eyed 16 year old and loved it. When I saw the movie a couple of years later, I liked it. I will be the first to admit the experience with an interactive audience makes it loads better.

I think it speaks to the fact that the show itself is dependent on a "live performance" energy for it to really work it's magic. I'm sure the Actors' Repertory Theatre production will be a blast and I wish them every success with it.

Hi-ho, I play bass in A.R.T.'s "Rocky Horror" band, and I was pleased and amused to discover that our on-stage back-up singers -- whom are in their teens -- are big devotees of the film, so apparently the love of the film and/or the show is not limited to people who were yet born when it all started.

As for myself, I first saw the movie at the UA Cinema Midnite Movies in 1981. I was a sophomore and my parents were uptight about letting me out so late, and as it turned out I was the only 'virgin' in that night's audience, so I was hauled out in front of the screen and made a spectacle of. (It was all in good fun.) Frankly [no pun intended, really], I didn't much understand or 'get' the movie at that time, but it was pretty eye-opening.

THIS production is gonna ROCK.

I'm 31, heard of it often but never had a chance to see it...interested, but slightly wary - is this something for the unitiated? Would one be completely lost if attending for the first time?

i've seen rocky, oh, 20-30 times? For two summers while attending Hoover High, my friends and I eagerly anticipated the midnight movies at UA Cinema, arriving armed with all the accoutrement required. quite the formative experience.

How do you do, I
see you've met my
faithful handyman
He's just a little brought down
because when you knocked
he thought you were the candyman
Don't get strung out
by the way I look
don't judge a book by its cover....

that's all I can remember right now, but know that Rocky Horror is like riding a bike...it was a great moment in time for those of us who were there to experience it, live it, watch it over and over again at that theatre with the sticky floor, and perform it (in our own provincial way)

Are there any Sigma Chi's out there who remember when the Theta House put it on for Derby Days? We did drive a motorcycle into the house... circa 1984... good times.

I am also in ART's production of The Rocky Horror Show! I am 36 and anyone in my age group knows that we spent every waking moment in front of the television watching MTV, back when they only played music videos 24-7. However, on Halloween they would play The Rocky Horror Picture Show for 24 hours. That's how I fell in love with Frank and his cooky band of minions! This production is not as cheesy as the movie! It's fresh and updated with an edgy hard rock sound! But it still has all the charm of the movie. To my cast mates and the band I love ya! You all kick ass!

I'm 41 and I remember being introduced to Rocky Horror about 1980. We were counselors at Boy Scout camp in Big Sur and some of the older staff told us about this move we had to see. So we piled about 8 of us and ended up driving about an hour from the camp, out in the wilderness of Big Sur, up to Monterey where it was shown at the Dream Theater on Fridays and Saturdays at Midnight. Unfortunately due to a few well placed thrown hotdogs, staining the movie screen, they were not allowing all of the audience participation such as the hotdogs, toast, etc. As a "virgin" I had a great time and we came back several times during that summer.

Used to be one of the best movies to go see with friends! As long as everyone shared the same warped sense of humor!

I just remembered, when I saw the movie for the first time in Monterey was about 1985...they used to play a trailer of Repo Man and Shock Treatment along with a Devo music video before the movie...we had audience participation for those as well...

I went to the tower theater once in the late 1980s to see the film the place was packed it was an experience I was lucky to see one of the last showings of it at the Tower Theater years later I went to a packed out door showing at Fresno State I still have a glittery ticket stub for that showing and performance.
