arrow A public park is no place for a Civil War

civilwarrevisited.JPG

I'm just madder than heck about this weekend's "Civil War Revisited" event at Kearney Park.

An event like this has no place in our parks, where our children can see such violence. People trotting around with guns, influencing kids to carry guns, gunning around with guns, showing them it's more important to kill thy enemy (with guns) than love thy enemy. It's deplorable. There's already too much violence in our society -- and violence, no matter if it's for sport, history or eliminating the entire cast of "The Hills" -- is WRONG.

And why at this park? Isn't there a better place to hold such an event, than a public park meant for relaxing, enjoying nature and having 7-year-old's birthday parties. Kearney Park was intended to be one of the most beautiful parks in the country -- this is not what its founder and designer Rudolph Ulrich would have wanted. To see his park reduced to exploding cannons, deaths, banjo music, $45 dinners and war, well, Mr. Ulrich would be turning over in his grave. Isn't there somewhere else this event could be held? Like the intersection of Blackstone and Shaw, perhaps.

This is not even to mention the message an event such as this is sending to our society. Don't you see that our nation is being torn apart? Between our sludging economy, divisive politics, diminishing values and P. Diddy having access to YouTube, we're going downhill. What we need is to send a message that ours is a country working together, not one fighting with itself. Instead of fighting, why not sing songs, knit blankets and feed ducks.

If people must be at war with each other, fine. But not in a public park. Not where our kids are supposed to be learning how to play and learning to enjoy nature. I say put them in a steel cage, with a referee and rules and let them slug it out in there.

Whoa dude, easy on the mussel loaders. Who goes out to Kearney Park to relax anyways? Most of the time you WOULD have to have a gun to safely be out there.

No Public Park? Are you cool with them having Shakespeare in the Park? A rendition of Hamlet where EVERYONE dies an untimely death - and that is just a story conjured up a much celebrated literary icon - not actual history like the Civil War. Are we suppose to tell our kids that nothing violent ever happened in the past, we all die of old age and that guns shoot peace pixidust?

Any reason to actually get people outside and in the parks and off youtube is good enough reason for me. I'd rather take my kids to go see history in action than to the Woodward Park Ultimate Spectacle in hopes they would actually learn something other than how many butt darts you can take before your veins pop out of your head.

Mussel loaders? But you don't eat shellfish, Mike Oz.

Try reading this again, Geoff, but this time, pretend Mike is being silly and sarcastic.

I agree, and raise ya three chunks o' hardtack!

Theo Kearney would befoul the inside of his mausoleum if he knew this barbaric event were taking place. And at the same time as the Order of the Eastern Star ceremonies, yet!

By the way, is that Appleton in the right photo...after thinking WAAYY too much of himself?

Mussel? Ahhh Muzzle that's the ticket - I was subconsciously hoping they would have shrimp grenades and Fancy Ketchup for blood.

Hint of sarcasm noted I'll need to check my tone barometer next time!

Geoff, you have redeemed yourself with "shrimp grenades." Now I'm picturing the Swedish chef from the Muppets on the battlefield.

the civil war re-enactment is simply grotesque. bring the kids to experience on of the biggest massacres in our country's history! eat! dance! be merry!

pathetic. hasn't the historical society sucked at the teat of kmj/al smith long enough? no, they are drunk off the money.

i was wondering how long it would take for someone to miss oz's joke, and it only took two comments & twenty minutes.

well done, oz.

and adam, i read dj bradley's comment in the same vein as oz's post.

geoff, one question, what's this about, "how many butt darts you can take before your veins pop out of your head?"

Why not give KKKMJ and its listeners an excuse to go out and "whup them yankees" in support of slavery and states' rights (and to recruit McCain voters)?

Mike, you forgot to mention all of the drinking and cursing from the sidelines, as spectators cheer on the violence.
I guess it's not a good weekend to fly my confederate flag. No really, I'm from the South...we're given one at the hospital when we're born. And another when we're Christened.

Is that your tongue in your cheek or is that a wad of TOBACCEY?....Wrestling and History of our country in the Civil War (aka something educational, that kids need) are hardly the same. What value is that kind of wrestling good for anyway? Have them (the fights) at Valdez park with the roller derby girls.

Nice! What's really funny is that there HAVEN'T been any protests. I guess violence is OK as long as it's not on the north end of town.

Violence is only okay (for public interaction, anyway) if it pits right versus wrong. And somebody dies. And it doesn't disturb the bird sanctuary.

Oh, for god's sake. It has nothing to do with what part of town the re-enactment is held in. In a town this conservative, this kind of nonsense is "just part of our history," so it holds value to those who don't find it completely abominable. I'm sure if this was held at Woodward Park, there would be no protests.

I think this is just ridiculous. The Civil War Revisited is something my grandparents used to take me to every year, and I have very fond memories of it. It isn't promoting violence to young kids, but instead letting them witness a part of history in a more exciting way then reading out of text books. A lot of schools even let students get credit for attending the event, and writing reports on what they witnessed as well as what they got out of the experience. You could watch something on the history channel or walk into a class room and see videos being played for the students with just as much violence...would you in fact protest that as well?

HEY DUKE!

First off, I think that glorifying any war is NOT GOOD for adults or kids nor is it educational.
I think its a way for white men (yes i went there) to justify their fore-fathers actions.
This war in particular was so grotesquely glamourized that folks really think its okay to hang a confederate flag, a clear symbol of slavery, because it's part of our "history".
The U.S. obviously has a long history but i dont think its fitting to re-enact the vietnam war because it's part of our history, do you, DUKE?
Its this kind of glorification that makes those "good ol' boys feel justified.
And as for the Valdez "park", I agree that wrestling is more suited for that type of venue. Not that i enjoy wrestling but at least there is no EXPLOITATION of any race nor is it in any way held at a minorities expense.
And by the way, get to know your venues so when you speak about them, you'll know what you're talking about, k? It's Valdez HALL, not park.

The civil war is a part of history and if we are not teaching it to children they are going to make the same mistakes that almost tore the country apart over two hundred years ago. Saying that the civil war revisited is not important is the same as teaching children that history does not matter. If it gets children interested in learning about something that happened to our county. It does not matter the color of a persons skin about this it happened along with the Holocaust during WWII. If people ignore it happened they say it was okay.

For all ou Hippy liberals out there.. Listen up!!!

"War is Hell" as William T sherman said....

"It is well that war is terrible for we should grow to love it" Robert E. Lee.

These men who fought the real civil war died to help preserve the Union or for States rights. Which ever the case may be, no one can complain on how a reenactment is bad, and encourages children to play with guns. Its You, the parents who should tell your own child the rights and wrongs of guns and that guns dont kill people,, its the retard behind it. I am a reenactor of 18 years. Im 29 years old now, and civil war reenacting has saved my life from being in a gang or doing drugs. I encourage anyone who wants to know that our country was almost split in half, but was saved. I reenact as a confederate soldier incharge of a unit, with a mix of people, from white and black, yes I went there as well like some have said in their posts. If you dont like war or wanting your children to learn american history, then put them in a cave or go to Canada.

But America was founded by war, has survived by war and will be protected by war! We should never forget!

Anyone that doesn't know what the Civil War was really about, is just plain stupid. It is obvious that their knowledge of history is incorrect. Each solider had their own reason on why they fought the Civil War. Reanactments can be in any park as we may please. We pay our dues and people come and watch us with INTEREST.
Kids get to learn how it was during this time period and have more of an understanding than those stupid books they teach at school. Schools will never teach the REAL Civil War just blue verses grey.
My family and I have been reenacting for several years now and we always have kids asking so many questions about why school doesn't teach this and that. We are trying to preserve the memory on how our ancestors fought and lived back then. We are so spoiled now-a-days.
Instead of complaining about why this event shouldn't be taking place here, why don't you complain about how our kids are being taking to Gay Marriage ceremonies. Or how about trying to stop kids from jioning gangs and getting into drugs. This hobby has actually saved many people from going down the wrong path. So next time you bitch about something, think about the ways this can have a postivie side.
