When I first saw photos from shows this week at fashion week in Paris, I thought there was hope that some designers were looking out for regular women. See, models wore dresses like this:

Then I saw these designs ...

I guess some think women want to look like space-aged circus act nuns?
Comments:
I wonder if the designers have some inside bet on who can design the most outrageous outfit and then get a model to wear it?
I mean I'm a guy and know nothing about fashion, but are these outfits like those concept cars you see at autoshows that never make it onto the street? They seriously can't expect anyone to wear that last one can they? Well besides Posh Spice that is.

Just think how much attention Posh would get wearing the Storm Trooper outfit with those heelless boots?

To answer your question, Michael, yes, these are exactly like concept cars.
There are different approaches to fashion, and two examples are "avant-garde" and "ready to wear."
These pieces are obviously avant-garde. A designer will present an artistic concept like you've seen here (think of it as a form of modern art) and then release a "ready to wear" version that's actually able to be worn as a normal outfit. Then someone else will design a similar outfit, and someone else, and someone else, until finally I get to pick it up on clearance at Macy's. :)
We may laugh, but you probably own quite a few outfits that are direct descendents (many times removed) from a crazy outfit just like this.
