arrow Everybody knows "Paper Planes" by M.I.A. is old, right?

Miapaperplanescover.jpg

Guys, I've been miffed at the seven-months-later resurgence of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes." It was No. 4 on the Billboard singles chart last week. I must have heard it on the radio about 10 times over the weekend, and yeah, one station was calling it new music.

My 13-year-old sister set it as the song on her MySpace this week -- and she loves David Archuleta. See, folks, that's a sure sign of some crazy second-life for this song. If the "American Idol" kids are liking that girl from Sri Lanka ...

And it's not that I dislike "Paper Planes." It's a good song -- I just think it's interesting that the song gets huge all these months later. What's the cause? Well, it was in the trailer for "Pineapple Express." I know Seth Rogan has a lot of power, but that much? This is like if "Be Kind Rewind" -- they both came out in mid-February -- all of a sudden was the most popular movie in the country.

And February is just generous about the time I write on the tardy slip. That's when the single came out. The album where you can find the song, "Kala," came out in August 2007.

Good for M.I.A., though, I guess. And good for people listening to something other than T-Pain. Hey, have you guys heard Santogold yet? You might like her next year ...

Lame sound effects and poor singing. I got sick of Rihanna and her "Umbrella" last year but would gladly suffer through that one again.

...awwww c'mon mike...

You know stuff gets a second life, and sometimes can be bigger than the first.
-Consider 'Pretty in Pink,'
-By time the movie came out? The Furs had totally broken up, and they had to get together to re-record the single for the movie (much 'cleaner' sounding version, actually... I prefer the earlier 'raw' one,)

---and look how far THAT's gone???

blah blah blah we must all bow down to the wise Mike Oz who can read THE BLOGS faster than anyone and realize what is new long before any radio station could hope to do so.

But people might like this Golden Santoclaus you speak of next year, for a few days.

I noticed that too, when the B station played it as a "new song". That's why I enjoy reading Billboard Magazine and keeping up with the chart action every week. I'm sure it's a moot point but wouldn't it have been funny if the KISS station called Darius Rucker's solo song a "new song" but it's been out for quite a while?

AAARGH!! enough with the paper planes already!!! Im with you OZ. That song gets played SOOO many times on the jukebox at casa. And inevitably, some buzzing customer(s) loudly pronounce "Ahh dude...Pineapple Express!!!" It was humorous, the first 10 times. I really like Santogold. Especially that "My Drive Thru" jam with Pharrell!!

Yes, enough of "fly like paper" already, BUT I did devote an entire evening to M.I.A. once. Her dad was an activist which, I suppose, influenced her rebellious messages. "I've got more records than the KGB"...who says that?! I liked her more when they portrayed her as a simplistic fledgling village girl who was trying to fight the system for the people, more than when she sang from on top of tree branches in the jungle looking like she just stepped out of a spa.

Mehr.

But I like the sound overall...very groovy. And she writes/produces mostly everything. Not everyone can say that.

I think the paper planes resurgence stems from the fact T.I. samples it in "Swagger Like Us." There's also a ka-gillion remixes, including a mash-up of Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive," with the "Paper Planes" beat laced underneath. As for Santogold ... her album is okay. Her best work is the Converse Song "My Drive Thru" produced by and featuring Pharrell.

Radio will always be behind because no one is forcing radio to change. Stop listening to the radio and maybe radio will be forced to change.

Mike, Mike, Mike. You already know that most radio stations are a bunch of followers.
M.I.A. is sooo 2003.
Just be cool like me and stick to listening to the latest when they come out and forget that everyone will always be lightyears behind us.

mike, ..you know what bugs me....MONTHS ago...I was diggin' MIA, I mean I don't like every song, but her videos were something different, and I really did like Paper Planes..NO ONE listened to me to try her out. Cuz they hadn't heard of her..now...Pinapple Express comes along, and its a hit......on myspace pages everywhere, and on ipods and radio...

I guess what I'm really expressing is that I'm an ignored human being..!!!! woah is me.... hehehe.
