arrow Place Your Bets: Is Fresno Wabo really opening next week?

Buzz in the pages of The Bee says that Cabo Wabo is on schedule to open Aug. 12, or in other words -- Tuesday.

Pardon me for being skeptical, considering Cabo Wabo was supposed to open in November, then in April, then in June. But you don't start throwing out months with actual dates attached unless you're close, right?

Here's a photo from The Bee's Craig Kohlruss showing Fresno Wabo's status as of two days ago:

On the outside at least, it doesn't look too different than when I was out there in June. Though I guess this could be a soft, soft opening. What do you think?

Comments:

No way this is opening on Tuesday, it's been plagued with construction problems for so long. If it does open on Tuesday I'll buy the entire beehive a pitcher of margaritas.

Ok I'm just using this as an excuse to drink. But still I don't think it will open next week.

I see that poor coaster laying about in pieces whenever I drive down the 168. Shameful waste.

I have to use a psuedonym cuz I'm working with one of the companies at Granite Park, but here's my advice - you can tell when Milt Barbis is lying when his lips are moving. There are places there that were supposed to open two full years ago that are barely started or not started at all. He's barely got enough money to keep the construction people working and can't afford to hire ANOTHER construction company so only one company is going to do all the work, moving from one project to another.

This wouldn't really be a problem if Barbis would quit lying about the progress. If he'd just say that it's going to open when it opens, which may be in 10 years, instead of making up certain dates.

I don't think anyone will even go to Cabo. The deep pockets are totally on the opposite side of town from the location. It really makes no sense to have the location where it is at. The only worse location than where it is would be in the downtown area. Have people learned nothing?

Tom have you even been to Granite Park? Both Public House (which is one of my current favorite hang out spots) and Me N Ed's are always packed. People will go to Cabo because some of us don't want to go to Fresno North all the time and want something different.

People do studies before they do a development like this. They just don't pick a place at random. I wouldn't be suprised to see this place be active once it's finally done. Honestly I'm getting sick of Riverpark and their just enough to be legal parking. I want something different and I bet I'm not the only one.

Yes, I know where it is at. The surrounding location is very bad with low income neighborhoods and crime pervasive all throughout the surrounding neighborhood. The last time I went to the Me N Ed's there, I had to go down one of the side streets to turn around and there literally were 5 cop cars surrounding a house with their lights on and flashlights out. I kid you not. The location is a little dicey.

I think...

Hmmm...

I think it's NOT going to happen. If it does, I think it'll be premature cuz they are NOT ready to open. They'll be like those people that shove a mess into their closets when guests come over. It might work, but it ain't right :-p

Yeah, I think "Anti-Granite" is telling the truth of the situation. I want all of Granite Park to be up and running, but I want it to be done right.

Rule of thumb: Never put trust in a developer's timeline. They always set unrealistic dates, trying to keep the hype going...but THIS is getting ridiculous.

We'll see.

I live not too far from Granite Park.

Tom has a point, ---but at the same time, the neighborhood isn't as bad in some areas as others, --and you can find yourself on some streets that are pretty great, --and others where you need to watch it.

That having been said?
I think the folks in this area 'get that,' and don't let it keep us from going out and doing what we do.

I think it's sort of 'in the balance,' right now, --and could go either way...

---A major factor NOT discussed is that the ballparks there have folks from all over the area (and the Rancho's and such,) there.
---Now, if they keep the parks up,
and they build the draw?
You're going to have a lot of folks who are from outside the area coming in and creating their 'own' neighborhood there (which will be family focussed,) --and that will stand amidst/against the surrounding 'trouble,' if/when it's there...

---So it could be a real gem, --if done right.
--If it's let to go to seed?
Folks 'll find something nicer,

--and Granite will tank... fast and become just another 'banger ghosttown.

I can't wait for this to open.
It's going to be something new a fresh in town.

I hope it all does pull through for Tuesday! :)

I live near Granite Park and I really dont understand the notion that it is a unsafe neighborhood. Yeah so some areas aren't as upscale as others but the fact is, Michael is right, there are studies of the demographics surrounding the area and research obviously showed this is a viable money making location.
And really if Fresno let the fear of building retail businesses near a bad neighborhood with pervasive crime, River Park would not exist. Have we forgotten about Pinedale?

I mean really, if its not north, someones going to find some way to knock it.

Tom- I invite you to spend one evening at Public House or Victory Grill. It can be any night you chose. I guarantee the parking lot will be full and the restaurants at capacity.

I don't think it will happen by Tues.

Having been a part of the construction biz for about 11 years, I can tell you from experience construction timelines are, to put it nicely, a work in progress. They can fluctuate for a variety of reasons. Especially when your one of that last people in the building (cabinets/finish carpentry).

So, I wouldn't exactly hold my breath on the Tues. deadline. I hope they can pull it together, but from what I saw in that picture, uhhh, I don't think so.
