arrow Swede Festival deadline extended

swedefest.jpg

We've mentioned swedes (not the Kingsburg kind) before, but now that a deadline for the festival is approaching, it won't hurt to get the word out -- especially since there is a new deadline.

Here's what went out on MindHub earlier this week:

For all of you 'hubbers working on your Swede films, we have some great news! Fresno's First Swede Festival, to be held at Corridor 2122, has a new deadline of Monday, August 4th, to submit your fine works. This will give you another weekend to add the finishing touches. Email your work via YouTube to info@corridor2122.com by August 4, 2008. Finished films should be between 3-5 minutes.

The top films will be shown during Raines' August SPLASH Show on Saturday, August 9th, at 2:00 pm at Corridor 2122.

So it's not too late to get started. Heck, Josh and I haven't even picked a film yet. (Suggestions, anyone?)

While I think of one, here are the swedes of some of my favorite movies:

The Princess Bride:

(also, a very impressive Lego version)

The Big Lebowski (spoiler alert: Donny's ashes scene):

(and "The Big Wazowski")

Fight Club (part one):

(and part two)

Brokeback Mountain (with women in the lead roles):

Pulp Fiction (and these just keep getting worse):

If anything, I hope this post has been inspiring. As the last couple of examples proved, it doesn't take much to swede your favorite movie. I think this sort of thing can be a real fun opportunity to bring local artists and film geeks together. So, in words of "Jerry Maguire," who's comin' with me?

Hopefully will be able to finish mine tonight. Got the action scenes shot, now just for the rest. But man it's hard fitting a whole movie into five minutes. Hopefully it won't suck. Too much.

We'll be finishing our Usual Suspects swede shooting tonight. Hmmm...I think your original idea you had mentioned to me would make a great swede! That Princess Bride one is great!

Joey you can be in my next one. I'm planning on doing X Men, wanna be Storm? Since I'm Stormy? :D

And if anyone needs an extra body for theirs, let me know. I'm seriously getting into this, I've already started the script for X Men and have been throwing around some ideas on how to do Lord of the Rings trilogy.

And I'm hoping to finish filming tonight for my submission (I ran out of daylight yesterday). I may have a rough draft up on the Tube tomorrow, as soon as I do I'll post the link here.

geez, I finally GET it. I'm thinking...what do these film clips have to do with Sweden. I'm watching them, thinking they each might have some comic reference to that land up there in Northern Europe.....When they posted this on mindhub, I sent a 'helpful' message about folks in Kingsburg who might help out.

The Big Lebowski one is dumb. They just played it straight. I'm thinking doing a straight scene isn't the point of Swedes.

I tried to do my swede the same way in Be Kind Rewind. Take it seriously, and go as low budget as possible and improvise when you have to. I think I spent total $20 and that was on a bunch of aluminum foil and gold and red celophane.

The better ones I've seen on the Tube, Shining, Jurassic Park, and of course Brodiemash's, are faithful homages to the movie they are portraying. Others just tried to be goofy and they didn't look as good. But I think the real point of the swede is to do the movie the way you want to do it.

Yeah, I agree, Fresnan. It was pretty much a lift and the performances weren't stylized enough, I thought. It's about putting a spin of your own an the performances, costumes & props. Still, the point is to get people out there and do something so that's better than nothing, I guess.

Ok, watching The Big Lebowski one again, it seemed flat. Course I've never seen the movie and have nothing to compare it to.

And I finished filming last night (finally). I so can't wait for people to see this. I have to add some "special" effects and a title and credits and then I'll upload it to the Tube.

the lebowski one is flat ... it's shot and edited well, but as a fan of the movie, i was bored with the swede.

im worried because i plan on shooting a scene shot-for-shot this weekend, and i dont want it to come across flat. but how bad do i make it?

i think there's a fine line between hilariously bad and just plain unwatchable.
