arrow Mike Oz's Monday Muxtape

Here's the second installment of my Muxtape series. Lots of fresh stuff here -- from the funk to rock to hip-hop, from Beck to Elzhi. Click the tape to listen to my current Muxtape playlist. Warning: Some language NSFW.

For your reading accompaniment, here are some notes and thoughts on my picks:

Black Kids - Listen To Your Body Tonight
We've already covered my current fascination with Black Kids, but I woke up singing this song today, so I had to include it.

Beck - Modern Guilt
Of everything on Beck's latest album (a collabo with Danger Mouse), the title track moved me the most.

Ra Ra Riot - Each Year
Honestly, I don't know much about this band, but the CD came across my desk last week. I listened to the whole thing once and then I went back to this song right away. It's nice. I dig it.

Albert Hammond Jr. - GfC
Admittedly, I'm a little late on the lead single from this The Strokes guitarist's new album, "¿Cómo Te Llama?" -- but whatever, it's a good song.

Justin Nozuka - Criminal
You might have seen this dude on VH1 (he's one of those You Oughta Know artists). A lot of people probably know that "After Tonight" song, but I like this one too. I can get with his acoustic-soul vibe.

MGMT - Electric Feel
Still can't get enough of this song or MGMT.

Chin Chin - Miami
I've decided that I'm moving on from The Ting Tings to Chin Chin, a funk/jazz band outta Brooklyn that's signed to hip-hop label Def Jux.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns - Mystical Brotherhood
I have no idea what this is, but, good lord, is it funky. There's a whole album of afro-funk like this. Don't sleep.

Fashawn - Shut Up & Let Me Go
OK, fine, more Ting Tings. Fresno rapper Fashawn jumped on the UK duo's current single, turning it into a club anthem. It's pretty infectious.

Kid Cudi - Embrace the Martian
It's no ATLiens, but Kid Cudi drops some of the better outer-space rap I've heard. Not that I've heard a whole lot of outer-space rap.

El Prez - It Is What It Is
El Prez remind me of The Pharcyde in some ways and this song reminds me of a great West Coast summer anthem in a lot of ways.

Elzhi - The Leak
Damn, Elzhi is really good at rapping. This new album is coming in August. Aptly titled, here's "The Leak," produced by the great Black Milk.
