arrow Earthquakes inspire comedy on the Internet

Assuming no one is hurt by the 5.8 5.4 earthquake that hit Los Angeles this morning, I will keep posting these all day ...

-- Fallout from the North Hollywood earthquake! (see photo above)

-- "When the earthquake struck I bravely bolted past my small children to secure my 50" plasma on the wall. I'm a hero, it didn't break." (a Tweet)

-- One person's "tragic loss" (here's another) (and another, though arguably less valuable)

-- A Tweet so inappropriate yet one of which I dare not deprive Beehive readers (update on this woman)

-- Here's video of a puppy seemingly reacting to the quake (at the :33 mark):

-- The "Big Brother 10" cast after their camera feeds come back on (warning: language):

-- Some bad acting ... but at least he's trying:

-- Gossip blog thinks of Paris Hilton first ... awww

-- Mother and daughter IM each other after earthquake

-- A listing of one Twitterer's friends' tweets

-- One blogger's first earthquake experience

-- Shampoo pickup on aisle 9 (store had to close to clean up)

-- The apparent state of TV news these days

In a more serious analysis, The Bee's Opinion Talk blog confirms that while The L.A. Times went down, Twitter had a big day today. And now The Times is saying the same thing.

The best comment I saw was on a message board:

"SoCal can't even have as good of earthquakes as NorCal. Wannabes."

I have a few friends back east who texted me hearing there was an earthquake in "Cali" and wanted to know if my house had fallen down. Sad thing is they were serious.

I need new friends.

Good to hear your house didn't fall down, Michael. I'll check on mine when I surf home from work tonight.

(actual text I just got from my younger brother in NYC)

(bro)
'-you okay?, just checking to see if Fresno had any aftershocks.'

(me)
'-Huh?'

(bro)
'-EarthQuake in LA, pretty good size...'

(me)
'-Really??? Nope, no worrys, didn't even know until you text'd me, don't worry, NOTHING ever happens in Fresno.'

(bro)
'-Yeah, one of my customers just told me '...Don't Worry, he's safe, He's not in California, he's in Fresno...'

...finally getting the hang of this place...

Had lots of SoCal people on Twitter send a tweet first, then find safety in a doorway.

(so I call my parents (Jersey) just to let them know everything is cool.)

(ring-ring)

(Dad) '-Mr. Field here...'
(Me) '-Hello Mr. Field, it's Mr. Field' (we do that just to crack each other up.)

(Dad) '-Heeeey, how ya doin, buddy?'
(Me) '-oh not bad, not bad, just heading out the door, I wanted to call and tell you that the earthquake was far south of here and everything is fine...'

(Dad) '-Oh that? It was nothing, don't worry, we're fine... nothing fell of the walls or anything.'
(Me) '-?'

(Me) '-Dad, I'm calling to tell you I'm fine...'

(Dad '-Oh, wait a minute, you're calling about your EarthQuake out in California?
Yeah, I know, you're in Fresno, that thing was nowhere's near you...'
(...Dad joined the Marines out here in the 50's)

(Me)'-Yeah... what are YOU talking about.'
(Dad) '-I thought you meant OUR earthquake.'
(Me) '-Huh?'

(Dad) '-yeah, we had a minor one out here, I think they felt it in BoundBrook, Somerville and Raritan and all... nothing big, I think it made it into the 'unusual event'news' as a tag on...'
-nobody even mentioned it much until you just called, I was surprised that you knew if it...'

(Me) '-uh, no, I had no idea...
I mean, they don't even report on the news here, for here, let alone what's back in Jersey.'
-When WAS this, how bad, NObody calls me?
(Dad) '-not that big a deal, the buildings shook a bit, but nothing fell down of any significance, I think it was yesterday or the day before or something...'

(Me) '-oh, well then, uh, never mind...'

(Backstory:
NYC, NJ, and a lot of the surrounding area is built some really nasty faults,
-only our 'rock plates' are actual granite, (so an earthquake of any magnitude?
-will trasmit monster shocks and drop TONS of buildings that are sooooo not ready for earthquakes...

(We don't talk about how bad 'the big one,' or even a 'little big one,' is going to be.
(---not to mention thousands of old weary dams and reservoirs off in the hills and all over the place that are likely to fail.)

We've been expecting a monster quake in the Metro Region for some years now, and there's been a lot more seismic activity in recent years...

(Maybe A-Rod and Madonna hooking up was not such a hot idea afterall...)

This is why I love California. A seemingly large earthquakes strikes, and no one bats an eye. We're either tough or desensitized. It takes a good 7.0 to get to us...

Ernie, our houses aren't made of sticks and mud. It's a little less devastating here. ;)

The life is really tough but the people is more hard-hitting than that, it's really appreciating.
