arrow Nightclub Notes: Bliss opens, more on Roe, Weezy afterparty and more

A few notes on what's going on in Fresno's nightclubs ...

BLISS: EARLY REACTION
After lots of talk -- much of it disparaging -- Bliss opened its doors last night. Bliss, you might remember, is the new incarnation of On The Rocks (and Bisla's and a long line of other First and Shaw nightclubs).

Last night was an invite-only event at the European-styled club, with the grand opening happening tonight.

We got some early impressions from one of the invitees, who said:

"It was awesome! Fresno nightlife redefined! The atmosphere was chill; the set up was great and the staff was very professional. It’s something that I thought Fresno would never see, just something in big cities. I’ll definitely keep going back. There wasn’t a thing that I didn’t like!"

One of the biggest pre-opening gripes about Bliss has been the cost. Rumors were saying the cover would be as much as $30. On that issue, our source said:

"Last night was invitation only, so there was no cover charge. There were a few people that asked the owner and he said $20 and nobody really said anything. Personally, I’d pay it and the group I was with didn’t have a problem with it. Drink prices are the same I think … I had three different kinds and they were the same price as BBs.

"The set up is much nicer, the lighting and sound are awesome and the bar is practically wall to wall so you get your drinks FAST! The atmosphere just feels nicer. It kind of reminds me of the clubs in LA and Vegas."

Anybody else go? Tell us what you think?

ROE'S REMEDY AFTER ALL?
In last week's nightclub notes, I was skeptical about the new Remedy night at Roe. That got a quick phone call from promoter Lewis Everk, who acknowledged that Roe has been schizophrenic with its nightlife attractions, but that he and his crew were trying to bring some stability.

I got a short message from him on Monday morning that said, "Remedy was a success." Lack of details aside, I consider this a good sign: This Friday's Remedy has a big special guest DJ, Richard "Humpty" Vission, who is a big name in the house music world.

Here's the flier:

I'm keeping my eye on Roe.

THIS IS THE CARTER
It took a lot longer than I thought for a Lil Wayne concert afterparty to pop up. Well, it finally did last night. There's a post-show party going on at Tachi Palace in Lemoore. Peep:

MMMM MEATY
If you're not into those fancy clubs, but just want to go somewhere to dance to 80s and indie music (and you're not afraid of doing it in a gay bar), Meatball Magic might be the spot for you.

It's a really fun, relaxed, non-pretentious vibe. It's going on Friday night -- and it's free

SHOUT-OUT TO OUR GIRL MS. SOULFLOWER
Not sure if this is exactly "nightclub" ish, but Devoya Mayo aka Ms. Soulflower, who we absolutely adore and who has great taste is music is starting a Patio Summer Series at Palomino's.

Good people, good spot, good music ... yeah, we dig it.

This sounds like it's from a press release:

"It was awesome! Fresno nightlife redefined! The atmosphere was chill; the set up was great and the staff was very professional. It’s something that I thought Fresno would never see, just something in big cities. I’ll definitely keep going back. There wasn’t a thing that I didn’t like!"

Sure does, Heather. I NEVER trust those types of comments. You get nothing... A sort of "non-information" when the subject is that hyped, lol. I'm still very interested tho. I'll check it out... one of these days.

PS: I know, I know. Never say never... but yeah, I NEVER trust that kind of comment ;-)

According to an onslaught of MySpace bulletins: No cover charge at Bliss tonight.

Hmmmm.

riding by (Bliss) on my way home last night:
-tonsa cars
-lotsa folks 'shmoozing' in parking lots
-more tonsa cars
-quite a few po-lice hanging out at front door
(Didn't see anybody getting cuffed or doing the 'perp-walk,' so it probably was just 'added security.')
...pretty interesting Dodge Charger with graphics on the side, though...
--building lights are quite pretty (very 'close encounters of the Shaw and First kind.')

PS:
-Meatball Magic promo?

VERY 'miss-america / frank-black-teenager-of-the-year / 'aliens'-creature sort of motif (with pearly whites.)
-is she laughing? screaming? gasping? (is that hair or a saliva string across her mouth???)
-oh well, at least she flosses.

Oh yeah... and I'm definitely trying to get out to Palomino's on the 27th ;-)

Sounds cool.

Let's see I guess I am going to have to say I was right on this one despite them saying (from their own words) this would NOT be a top 40 and hip-hop club. Here is the flier you posted today for Post No Bills for the Bliss nightclub.

THURSDAYS
Corona Night
TOP 40 / HIP HOP

FRIDAYS
MASH-UP / ROCK / ALTERNATIVE

SATURDAYS
HOUSE & ELECTRO / TOP 40 / HIP HOP

Who would of known.

Ha! You beat me to it, Rob.

Yeah, I didn't think that would hold up either -- but I didn't think the walls would fall this soon. Or maybe I did.

*shrug*
