arrow It's a Legendary Tuesday ...

lucky_CST.jpg

Full disclosure on this one: I used to be a total Living Legends fanboy. This happened not long after the Wu-Tang Clan had become not as exciting as it once was. So the Legends, this Wu-like rap collective of L.A/Bay Area emcees known for throwing the middle finger to the mainstream record industry, had me riding B.A.R.T. out to Berkeley, looking for the latest in Legends tapes at Amoeba and attending events such as their Broke Ass Summer Jam.

Reminiscing aside, today is a big day for the Living Legends, one that hits home here in Fresno, where Aesop, one-ninth of the crew resides. The Legends are releasing their first group CD in a while called "The Gathering." Also, one of the most beloved Legends, The Grouch, is releasing, "Show You the World," his first studio album in almost five years.

Furthermore, Legends leader Luckyiam (aka PSC, aka one-half of Mystik Journeymen) is performing tonight at Starline. The show is at 9 p.m. Cover is $12.

It's been a while, actually, since I've been to a Legends show. When I was 18 and 19, I used to be there on the regular. Tonight seems like a good night to throw an L in the air again.

Dopeness after the break ...

Damn....already have plans for tonight. Why can't the good hip-hop shows ever get decent promotion here in town?

ya know mike... seriously?

I think one of the things that really endears me to you as a writer, is just the difference in packaging and how your passion comes out.

I am admittedly seventies-eighties-nineties as a music freak and (former) DJ.
and, in my world (E. Coast Tri-State)
there really weren't that many guys who matched our description that were heavy into rap, hip hop, any of that.

(That's all changed now, I guess,
but you're talking to a guy who saw Vanilla Ice as 'revolutionary, um, wait, okay, never mind... (and I've never even thought of liking Eminem... I mean, like, remotely...)

(Urban Music had very strong cultural adherances, and it had to be somebody like Run DMC with Aerosmith doing a collaboration to make it into the 'burbs
(OR the Beasties...

(hang on a minute... really want to sit in the wayback machine... ahhhh Beasties... ....
... hokay.)

But usually I was into Prog, Punk, NewWave, Techno, Psychodelic, Roots, Trance, Hellbilly, Swing, Southern, Boardwalk, even some MOTown or Jazz (lotsa Jazz.) and funk.
(It was a different world, you hafta unnastand.)

But, tried as I might could never really get my head around hip hop or rap. (trip hop, sure, hick-hop, okay...
(Dunno why... it just never happened.)
-and it's not because of the delivery style, because I love punk.

I digress

Surprise.

But

each time you write about your fav's and your feelings about it all?
A bridge is built and crossed.
I dunno,
maybe it's like the musical equivallent of the Jamaican Bobsled team (with spraypaint,) for me.
I care about what you say.

I readilly admit, my tastes in Rap are dangerously whitebread and mainstream... (aside from when folks collaborate with europeans and northerners such as Bjork.)

But if anyone could get me to check out such a foreign world, and try something that I figured I'd never be into... and probably like it?
It'd be you.

I think 'Paste,' is the only periodical that has had that effect on me in a grand scale.

As for you? As a music writer in my life?,
I think that would be considered 'mission accomplished.'

...we'll always have 'Pauls Boutique.'

Enjoy your show.

best

Wet Towel: Thanks.

Brodie: It was promoted decently. I've seen it around MySpace. It was in 7 last Friday. It's on CentralCali.com.

did they just say fresno... (a long time ago?)

...yeah, as if on cue (I was listening to some stuff on the Zune and what to my wandering ears should appear...

"B-Boy Bouillabaisse"

[Get On the Mic]

'...Get on the mic Mike let's be real and don't cloud the issue
The rhymes are dope an M.C. you must listen to
People say that they been missin' me and missin' you
Get on the mic and let's show them like we used to
You say f*** that yo holmes f*** this
The king Ad-Whammy your Dick Butkus
One half science and the other half soul
His name's Mike D. not Fat Morton Jelly Roll
M.C. Busy Le Disco fooled around in...
...FRESNO...
Got over on your girlie cause you know she never says no
Well Mike D. is a special individual
Pulling out knots pulling in residuals
Go to the movies get the Rolos the cholos riding slow and low
Mike on the mic and bust with the solo
Mike my stromy don't be so selfish
Get on the mic cause you know you eat shellfish...'

(I had no idea that there was a Fresno connection, some of the sampling on this is amazing, btw, it's almost like a hip-hop opera...

care to shed a little light?
