From Pismo Beach to Fresno Beach?!? The joke's on ... someone else
Apparently people in Pismo were pissed to hear yesterday that their city council would be changing the city's name -- and the replacement in mind was Fresno Beach.
City Hall got bombarded with angry and confused calls, all wondering the same thing, "Fresno?!?" I guess we're totally allowed to go spend our disposable income there, but no way are they naming the place after us.
It was an all an April Fool's prank anyway, perpetuated by radio station 95.3, The Beach and its morning show host Adam Montiel. He had edited an interview with a city councilman to make it sound as if the Fresno Beach idea was real. Listen to the audio here.
Yes, it was another Fresno-as-a-punchline scenario. But at least we can say the joke is someone else.

Comments:
Funny stuff! Yeah, Pismo does seem to be the default beach o' choice for Fresburgers. I suppose it's the quickest one to get to. I'd like to know the statistics of how much of the Splash Cafe's clam chowder is bought by folks from the Central Valley. We certainly are an important part of their economy.

I think this is funny, and hope Fresnans don't go all fresnan and freak out about this.
Ya know, we go through this all the time back east in 'Jersey where the coastline is pretty seriously div'd up between people who, much of the time live in completely different states than 'Jersey itself.
New Yorkers:
(Sandy Hook, Seaside Heights,Island Beach State Park)(New York has plenty of their own beaches too.)
and
folks from Philly
(Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Wildwood, Ocean City.)
-Ocean City SO much to the extent that it gets referred to as 'South Philly on the Atlantic,' and when you go there most of the license plates on the cars say 'Pennsylvania.'
(The entire town was in a state of mourning and shock when (former) Philly Mayor Rizzo died.
(plus) there is an expressway (highspeed 'interstate,') that runs directly from Philly straight across NJ to Atlantic City.. basically the place is just an extension of Philadelphia.)
In fact, MOST beach towns anywhere have their 'crowd,' the place caters to tastes of that crowd, -and If you shift your attention away from that group?
Hope you have another something better looking to stay and spend money, or the place will become a ruin despite how built up it once was (Do a quick history search of 'Asbury Park.' it will shock you.)
I think you can even go with single word discriptions of a lot of the places,
-and it would have more to do with the visitors than the natives, the natives and 'year rounds,' being remarkably different than the visitors:
Montauk L.I.(NY) 'the end,' (rustic fishing, camping etc.)
Fire Island, NY -high end, very family, AND very gay.
Sandy Hook, NJ -unofficial 'nudist' section, (bird sanctuary and pre WW2 cement bunkers and forts.)
Point Pleasant NJ: mid-class family, (boardwalk not rowdy, very safe place, actually.)
Seaside Heights NJ: Bon-Jovi meets the Sopranos (lotsa partying.)
Coney Island, NY: (Imagine the complete opposite of Clovis in every possible way, in fact, if they had 'Big Hat Day,' in Coney Island? you probably don't want to look.)
Asbury Park, NJ: (of 'Springsteen Fame,') former resort town, declined to a ruin, (where(both) 'Stardust Memories' and 'City by the Sea were filmed (the place went from one extreme to other in less than ten years.)
-then tons of gay folks began to buy the gorgeous old houses, fix them up, and (voila!) the neighborhood is rebuilding right next to:
Ocean Grove, NJ (massive ancient performance hall (Stardust Memories) and huge tent city of conservative Christians each summer.)-rest of the year, it's tons-a-boarding houses and is a bit on the dangerous side,(they have a body count during the off season.)
My old stomping grounds was a sprawling town where we had to put up with our highways bumper to bumper on the weekend, and where I (personally) avoided the beach until the off seasons most of the time.
(What was weird?:
Central and North Jersey folks called the tourists 'Bennies,' (even had bumperstickers that said 'Bennies Go Home,' -and we'd dress like them on Halloween,)
-Wheras Philly residents called 'em 'shoe-bies,'
--because they always walked in groups and brought their lunches in shoe-boxes.
(Philly has a massive draw because of the historic buildings, museums, etc... we've all been going there since elementary school.)
There's always been a balance between 'the natives,' and the visitors on all counts, they DEFINITELY need each other, and are often profoundly different in their use and appreciation of the same space.
-In fact, you go to one town or 'beach,' or another depending on the mood you're in and what you're looking for Because the cultures are so remarkably different (and this is in a state that you can drive from one end to the other in a couple of hours.)
(Despite the insults lobbed back and forth?, NOBODY takes it much to heart, (unless it's like, large groups of criminals taking over the place,
-but even then we find a way to make them feel comfortable: (Last time I was home, I saw this huge sign, custom carved greeting everybody: 'Seaside Heights, NJ: What happens in Seaside Heights, STAYS in Seaside Heights.')
...badda bing.

It goes to show that Fresno will be a JOKE to any city, anywhere. The Pismo locals dont seem to like the Fressies.

I LOVE THAT IDEA!!!!
I think Pismo should be renamed to Fresno Beach. I love more the fact that the folks of Pismo got all pissy about it. I think we should all converge in Pismo next weekend with signs promoting, "PISMO, THE BEACH THAT'S COOL ENOUGH TO BE FRESNO"

I am the guy who did the radio bit in slo/pismo beach. Great Job Mike Oz. I had no idea that there is such a deep seeded issues that the two cities locals have with each other. I for one am cool with the name Fresno Beach! If you guys can bottle tap water and call it Aquafina, I think thats pretty damn cool. I love the stuff!
