arrow ROGUE REVIEW: Elemental Dance

Dancers of different ages and skill levels are showcased in Elemental Dance, which serves as a preview to the spring concert at California Arts Academy. Some of the dances are nods to the earth and water elements. They are serene and almost meditative.

Among the highlights is "Glass Underwater," choreographed by Carla Stallings-Lippert, which begins with its contingent of dancers stretched out on the floor kicking their legs, as if they're in a water ballet. "La Papillon Blue," choroegraphed by Hannah Ozeran, has almost an Irish lilt feel to the music and dancing, while "Lullaby," choreographed by Noel Pryor has a sturdy sweetness to its movement that is effective. (Can anyone in the company tell me what music was used for this piece? It's beautiful.)

I also liked some of the pieces that have an earthier or more fiery focus. "Devil-ish," choreographed by Sarah Lofgren, has a jocular tone, with two dancers vying for top attention. (The piece manages to call to mind some of the more competitive aspects of the dance world.) And in "Magic Mirror/Broken Mirror," choreographed by Julie Ann Keller and Daniel Chavez Jr., the idea of objectification of female beauty is explored. (It's connected to a very nicely staged dramatic reading by Amanda Olson.) The dancers' costumes, covered with shards of broken glass, are distinctive.

Remember: This concert isn't necessarily at the level of professional dance -- there's more of a school pageant feel to the proceedings, and the show is probably a little overpriced for the Rogue -- but it is nice to see enthusiastic young people so enamored of their art form. There are likely some real stars in this bunch.

Playing: 1 and 5 p.m. Saturday 3/8 at The Severance Building, 1401 N. Wishon Ave. Cost: $7. Rating: G.

Correction: Carla Stallings-Lippert choreographed "Glass Underwater", not Jasmin Kloos.

To Dancer: Thanks for the heads-up about Carla Stallings-Lippert. I've corrected the original entry.

The music for "Lullaby" is Josh Groban with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I love this piece of music, it is one of my favorites used in this concert. My other fave is a selection from "The Devil Sonatas" by Tartini, used for the piece "Devil-ish".
