'Member that time George Lopez was funny? You 'member! No, I don't.
Comic George Lopez is performing in town tonight and he's likely to draw close to 15,000 people at the Save Mart Center.
This is a fact that completely baffles me. And not because I think the idea of seeing a comedy show in an arena is like drinking water from a mixing bowl. No, it's baffling because it means that there are 15,000 people who think George Lopez is funny enough to spend $40 or $50 to go see him live.
Really, Fresno? Because he had a really cheesy sitcom? Because he says things like "Why you cryin"? and "You 'member?" over and over again? Because he does really basic jokes about being Mexican? Because he's just a little bit better than Dane Cook?
About the best thing I can say about George Lopez is that his wife on his sitcom was hot -- unbelievably so, actually. Yet people are up on Craigslist begging for tickets. Two bills for upper level seats? Get that noise outta here.
Gimme Gabriel Iglesias any day.

Oh, SNAP! Mike Oz gonna feel the heat from the G-Lo fanz! His stand up was cool and my fiance kinda got me into his show. Yeah, it's corny with a healthy sprinklin' of some beanerisms here and there but it's decent (that might be the latino in me justifying the show). At least he's not as bad as Carlos Mencia.......damn that guy needs to pull a murder-suicide with Dane Cook. And very much agreed on the tv wife....*insert heavy spanish accent* MILF! MILF!

If I had a ticket and 2 free hours of time, I would be there.
If you had grown up like we did, you'd laugh till you pee'd your pants with the same memories. The blackend fork, the drunk relatives, and yes I 'member all of it. Guess its all what you experienced in life. I'm trying really hard here to not throw out the 'Hispanic' part but...... I can relate big time as can 14,999 others.
I wish I could be there.

I dunno. I've seen the stand-up specials and all, I gave him a try, I just don't think he's all that funny.
I get what you're saying Geanie, but at the same time, I think people find it funny because it's something they remember (and they feel like they're part of it) not because he himself is that funny.
Does that make sense?
Oh, and strike me down for this if you want, Brodie, but ...
Mencia > Lopez
Easily, as far as stand-up goes.
Their respective ventures into TV are kind of a wash, though.

Ok cool. And are you saying you got tickets but don't want to go? hahah You know how to reach me dude!
Posted by: Geanie at March 7, 2008 4:14 PM
Ha! I got nothing. I'm hitting a Rogue show or two tonight, actually.

"I think people find it funny because it's something they remember (and they feel like they're part of it) not because he himself is that funny"
This may be true, but it's a technique ALOT of stand up comedics use. I would call George Lopez unfunny simply on the basis that he uses that technique.
On the other hand, I too am not fond of his show. And on the other other hand, yes his tv wife is hot.

I'm going to the Blender thing at Ultra Lounge then being dragged kicking and screaming to a Southern Living party. Maybe if I get my sister a little tipsy, I can talk her out of the last part ha.

I just know one thing...I laughed till I cried when I saw him(isn't that what your supposed to do at a comedy show?), and so did most of my friends...I felt I got more than my money's worth.
But honestly, my favorite comedian right now is Jo Koy..I can't wait to see what happens with him.

All I can say is he makes my son laugh. He is even allowed to stay up late and watch him on Nick At Night. I wanted to get him tickets, and would have taken him, but he's got a drumline competition tonight and tomorrow.
He's not very devoted to any particular TV show - he likes online video games a lot more, BUT he will stop what he's doing for George. He'll even jump off the couch and do this little dance to the opening credits. It's hilarious, and I never tire of watching him have fun with that show. I think he particularly likes the interaction between Lopez and his mother. Not because it reminds him of our relationship, but perhaps somebody else's. It's good to laugh at where you've been. It helps you appreciate where you are today.

Agree on George Lopez (kinda dull). Agree on Dane Cook (ego out of control...not as funny as he used to be when he first started out). Gimme Louis CK or Dave Attell any day of the week over those two...but comedy is a subjective thing. So if folks want to pay $200 to see George...enjoy yourselves. Hopefully this response might encourage other comedians to come to Fresno...

Paul Rodriguez is way better than G-Lo and that joke stealer Carlos Mencia.
Posted by: Erik at March 7, 2008 8:02 PM
People are gonna show up then say to themselves "Damnit, Carlos Mencia is the funny one, what are we doing here??"
Posted by: Buck at March 7, 2008 9:33 PM
I didn't go see George last night, but I've seen him live before, i watched his sitcom the whole time it was on and watched his HBO performance. I'll take him any day over that obnoxious Mencia. Any time I see Mencia on t.v. I have to change the channel. To those of us who can relate to George's humor consider him "gente", he's one of us.

Erik, thanks for reminding me about this one. It's funny that Lopez hates Mencia for stealing jokes, but did you guys see George straight up steal a Dave Chappelle joke on The Grammys.
Not even at a show somewhere.
At The Grammys. On national TV.

I hate to say this but i went to his show. I thought he was decent. The guy opening i think was pretty funny as well. I'm asian and even I can relate to a lot of stuff George Lopez is saying. I think it has to do with growing up in this area and just being poor.

I was very fortunate to see both men perform the same night at the Tower years ago. At that time Mencia still had not change his routine the 2 prior times I had seen him. And I've talked to several people who went this past weekend. Lopez is doing the same. If you want to make money comedians. Stop with the one hour specials every year and do it after you finished your tour.
