Fres-Know: OK, so the Rogue's not the only thing going on ...
Local news, echoes from the blogosphere and other stuff that's amusing today:

tower district ...scary....(shakes head in disbelief) . . . wow.

Tower, scary? During the Rogue? And the Rogue would be more popular if it was on campus? Really? (such maybe for college students) Could Fresno State house all the stages needed to put on a festival like the Rogue? And how many of the current Roguers would still go to the Rogue if it were on the Fresno State campus?
I'll have to admit, the first time I was in Tower I was a little intimidated and didn't feel comfortable because it was unfamiliar. Now that I've been hanging out in the Tower it's a second home to me and it's not scary at all. Maybe if people came to Tower more and recognized what a gem it is in Fresno it wouldn't seem scary.

You posted this thing about people being scared of the Tower District right as I was blogging about that and the rest of the issue on Fresnocentric.com
The Tower isn't scary. Especially not during the Rogue. I spent all last weekend walking around either by myself or with my 13 year old kid. Unescorted. The scariest thing for me was, "Am I going to walk fast enough to make it in time to get into that show I want to see that's three blocks away?"
Renee asked if current Roguers would still go to the Rogue if it was on campus. I think I would be less likely to attend.

you know, i remember when fsu basketball was played @ selland. i know, it wasn't that long ago. but, people would always talk about how more students would go to games if they weren't downtown. and how more people in general would come as well. hmmm, save mart center built, still plenty of tickets available. still not that many students jamming up the game.
i would venture that these people interviewed wouldn't go even if it was on their campus. just like people in the tower district that don't go to the rogue. people go to what they want to. if you really want to go, you will. lame excuses like gas won't stop you. you know these students find a way up to riverpark, or where ever is the latest north point du jour.
and as for the video of compusa...huh? really, a 4 minute video of a guy wandering around inside a store that's closed down. am i supposed to be surprised it's empty? i watched about 30 seconds, saw that it was going to run for another 3.5, and got the hell out. what's the thought on linking that one?
Posted by: ed at March 6, 2008 3:11 PM
I thought somebody might get a kick out of it.
I'm sure Wet Towel could write at least a 500-word response to that video.
Hear that, WT, come defend my honor!

Ed: I think you dead on! :)

EEEEEK!
I think im scared to go to school with someone like Adrianna Padilla.
Ignorance scares me.
Good thing my classes are in the safety of the morning light and north of Shaw!

Ed: Just the fact that someone took the time to post a 4-minute video of an empty CompUSA building on YouTube is reason enough to link to it.
It's so brilliant the rest of us don't understand it.

I love how Adrianna says "I've heard" meaning she's never been to Tower District to actually witness it herself.

it's like a trash bag swirling in a whirlwind.

Jeez, Mike...
...erm, sorry babe,
best I got is:
'...you know, when folks move out of places in this town? The floors look reeeeeeally nasty...'
--though I look at the empty space and think:
-Indoor stock car track... (maybe)
-Indoor slot car track... (sure, yah-right.)
or
'...setting up huge speakers and blasting Gabriel and Dresden bootlegs through that place would be so excellent.'
(I actually had no idea that they had closed, I just been riding by the closed doors thinking it was a compu-geeks holiday, like Steve Job's Birthday or something...)
Other thoughts?
Though not as Rogue-ing as last year (major sched conflicts, I'll be lucky if I make three shows... (which is actually 2 shows more than last year... but last year was all volunteering and tons-a-fun.)
1. I agree with Solitare and Fresno's other 'lady who can do no wrong on stage,' (sing, dance, tell jokes... an she's prettier 'n a picture and hella smarter than all the boys in the room...
I've never been scared Downtown (nor) Tower, and have ridden through them loads of times middle of the night on a bicycle...
-since when is 'deserted,' scarey?
(There are some places I can take you in NYC, Philly, and 'Jersey that you need to be (and will be) scared in,
---but downtown Fresburg has never registered so much as a raised eyebrow let alone induced pucker factor...)
2. 'Fresnan' cracks me up though,
I mean, Rogue is the largest Fringe Festival in the country now, (was last year too,)
Is now being listed as a destination for like BOAC or Cathay Air or something?
-has got something for everbody,
Is WAAAY affordable, (okay, the BugsBunny Symphony Show set me back two-and-a-half,,, -but other'n that.)
EVEN the shows that are kind of 'unknown,' and 'not huge draws' are SELLING OUT...
-It is completely cool, and is TOTALLY Fresno (okay, Malaysian-Fresno, at first...(God Bless You Marcel, and Mum.)
(there's even (2) shows where the performers drink themselves into a stupor as a main part of the deal!
-AS WELL AS-
Totally 'Fresno-centric' themes in plenty of the shows...
(Three highschool girls piss everybody off because they mention a bunch of apparent 'bangers hanging off of one bicycle... (sounds like a circus act, actually.)
-btw?
I just finished up a job out in Kerman the other day,
my customer lived out in the middle of nowhere had two dogs that could eat anything within a quarter mile
AND
has more guns than a Spaghetti Western stashed under the bed '..you know, just in CASE...'
(...In Case What??? WW3 breaks out, and the Soviets mistake this hot-n-dusty realm for the valley of Megeddo???
--Something tells me these three young wimmins are onto something...)
I mean, Finally, for TWO WEEKS in March the rest of the planet thinks Fresno is COOL,
AND a destination.
(Yes, Even IN NYC
'Rogue and Fresno' are being considered as one of the 'only real places left to break out' and where 'stuff is actually happening,' performance-wise -as of over a year ago...
-My little brother told me that this was the buzz back home,,, I was stricken with chest pains and major flatulence, (and no it wasn't the tacquierra I had just visited...)
Still... through all that?
Mikey-Six-Pack's over there:
'...not ENOUGH Fresno!, TOO MUCH ROGUE! (er...Fresno!...
--oh meux meux, meux...!!!'
(..they even managed to pull a hockey game into the promos for cryin' in the sink...)
(...I think he's still sore because Starline wouldn't let him do a Dorktown Podcast 'live on stage' in a thong...)
(Which,,, I'd pay three bucks to see...
(not sure why,)
but I would.)
And as an added bonus on Sunday?,
-we get to see a whole bunch of people wrapped in brightly colored lycra so sheer that you can't help but to know their religion just looking at them,
as they rip around the tower on verrrrrry expensive bicycles, puking gatorade, and sometimes NOT making 'the curve'...
Nah.
For the first half of March?, Fresno totally freakin' rocks.
Vive' Le Rogue...
(how many words was that?)

683, Wet Towel.
An editor.
Seriously. You need an editor.
I cannot possibly read these long posts. And I LOVE you! What do the people who don't know you do?
Don't read.
Edit, man, edit.
As for the video...I'm not certain I really care what an 18 year old thinks of the Tower District...I kinda hope they stay at Fresno State til they get a clue.

Glad that CompUSA store is done with! All my experiences with the people that worked there (except for Apple Jack) sucked major B@!!$ every time. Even Carlos Slim wasn't able to change that and that's why the chain is no more.

Curious, I am, about Adrianna's reaction to the top headline in the Collegian today.
"University Village sued over shooting"
Wonder, I do, what has possessed me to talk like Yoda ...

Oh, and Wet Towel ... gracias.
Good point about Fresno in March. It is one of the best times for The 'No.
Posted by: Mike Oz at March 7, 2008 9:53 AM
Good gawd, I do love reading everyone's reactions to these things.
As for CompUSA, I'll miss it only because it was a "big box" store that I could by techy bits from that was NOT Worst Buy.
