The good and the bad of the new American Gladiators
After last night's two-hour premiere of the updated "American Gladiators," I'm a bit torn. Nostalgia tells me it was awesome. But the addition of current reality TV clichés have me close to calling out blasphemy.
I'll be watching again tonight at 8 to see if I can figure out just how I feel. 'Til then, here's my current list of likes and dislikes.
LIKE
Wolf: Dude is vicious.
DON'T LIKE
Hulk Hogan: Aside from him seeming totally out of place, his interview technique is just plain painful. "Anthony, you're a firefighter ..." is his idea of a question. He's even worse than Ahmad Rashad.
LIKE
Hit and Run: My favorite of the new events. Reminds me of the old Eliminator balance beam. Although, I'm sure the Hulkster shudders at the name.
DON'T LIKE
The New Eliminator: Too long. No Gladiators. Call me a 10-year-old, but it ain't an Eliminator without Gladiators waiting behind a wall as the competitors burst through toward the finish line.
LIKE
The Water: It feels a little "Double Dare"-ish and at first I didn't like it, but I think water as a destination for falling competitors is a nice addition. Just lose that crowd singing.
DON'T LIKE
The over-dramatic editing: I guess they had to "update" the show to keep with the current reality show ethos of keeping you hanging during commercials. Waiting until they're about to start the Joust, then cutting to commercial? Meh!
LIKE
The real drama: I can't front, I got a little hyped when Venus Ramos came back and won in the eliminator after I said, "she's done."
DON'T LIKE
Being able to throw the balls in Power Ball: This ain't basketball. You can't sink a three from half court. If Nitro were around, he would not stand for such foolishness.

Comments:
I was contemplating a drinking game: Every time Hulk says "brother", you take a shot. After the 54th or so "brother" that came out of the old man, I realized that you'd need some Ultimate Warrior-sized kidney's to take such punishment and survive. Overall, though....kinda liked the show.
