arrow Pizzaland: Closing? Closed?

Thursday brought more on Koffeeheads' closing, thanks to biz reporter Bethany Clough, then word via Fresno Famous that Upstairs Downtown would be shutting its doors at the end of the month. And now, Pizzaland is closing -- again.

This hit my inbox late yesterday from promoters who do rock shows at Pizzaland:

Pizzaland owners are giving up and its shutting down again.

"advertisements are so expensive" Joe the soon to be ex owner of pizzaland said

Bye Bye another all age venue

Just thought u would like to know

Effective when, I asked.

Well Joe the owner had us pick up the stage this morning and he has a makeshift sign that said closed today on it...im pretty sure as of yesterday

I haven't done any legwork to confirm yet, but this doesn't shock me at all -- given the place's turbulent history and how hard it seems to be to do business in Fresno these days.

Pizzaland, at Ashlan and Marks, had just re-opened under new ownership in January. New owner Joe Ramos wanted to bring back some of the live rock shows that Pizzaland had been known for over the years. It had hosted many a rising rock band (including the All American Rejects in 2003) and was one of the few all-ages venues in Fresno.

There were some interesting shows lined up in the coming months at Pizzaland, too. Odds are they'll find new homes. That's generally what happens when venues get ousted in our music scene. It's a shame this happens that much.
