It's official: Fagan's Irish Pub is finished
Carrie Fagan-Davis has made her decision and it's not surprising. Her downtown pub is closing.
A quick review: On Jan. 2 Fagan's Irish Pub announced it was closing for two weeks. The next day, we learned that Fagan-Davis was pondering whether she could keep the pub open. In the meantime, her struggles led to much media attention and local blog-talk (some from people who were genuinely sad and some saying, "Cry Me A River.")
On Sunday morning, Fagan's Irish Pub had a public auction and today Fagan-Davis gave official word of her decision to close the pub's doors.
Watch tomorrow's paper for my story on the matter, but for now, here's some of what Carrie had to say (unedited) in her e-mail to me announcing the closing:
I created Fagan's from a passion. I made Fagan's downtown, so it could be a part of something I believed in. I do believe in Fagan's. These last ten days brought so many wonderful people out. We've had over 300 emails from people who've said wonderful things. When the reporters asked me to meet them in front of Fagan's there were people applauding us on. On KMJ I received so many more wonderful compliments (except one yo-yo who talked about financial matters that he knew nothing about.)I am really worn down and I no longer believe in my abilities at Fagan's.
Yes, I was red headed at times and I stand proud to say that I didn't take gruff from anyone.
I have seen a few negative comments and I would like to address them ..
1) Someone mentioned that no one at Fagan's has ever been to Ireland. Well, I went to school there.
2) In regards to my staff, no staff is perfect all the time. Was the person who commented on my staff saying that they're perfect at their job all the time? My husband and I have finally been eating out these last 10 days and I can smile and say, "I guess our service isn't that bad."
3) As to Fagan's.... I have exposed my fears and concerns to the public. I did so in hopes that some would wake up to the problems with local downtown business. I was never taking blame away from myself. I was the creator. I was in charge. I just could not control things that I had no control over. I have talked about downtown like it's my place. Fresno, it's your downtown. And whatever is there, it's what you have. If you have no Fagan's, Kern Street Coffee, Fresno Hofbrau, even if you lose the baseball park. It's your downtown.
I will pray that Fresno someday will have a great Irish pub and that they will have more music venues in the style of Fagan's. I am so sorry. I feel like I have let the Irish down.

Comments:
That's sucks... Where are we going to go after baseball games?

Not surprising given all of her listed challenges in the previous e-mail. It's sad that many Fresnans (city council included) won't support downtown. If we continue to spread we will continue to lose our own identity. All the things that I have grown to love about my adopted home are dissapearing as it seems those living here want us to be more and more like the sprawling urban landscape of Southern California
