arrow Tim & Faith: The Night in Pictures

Country music's reigning power couple, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, brought their popular concert tour to the Save Mart Center on Monday night and it was a love-fest -- more so between the fans and their country idols, than between Tim and Faith.

The show sold out, of course. And not one of those Madonna sell-outs -- a real sell-out. According to Ticketmaster, this "Soul2Soul II" tour is the most-in-demand concert ticket of 2006.

Like any good married couple, Tim and Faith proved they were good together, but could have plenty of fun by themselves, too.

Here's the night, in pictures, with commentary on what as going on:

The concert started with Faith Hill rising from below the stage. Faith started out on one end of the stage. Shortly after, Tim rose from below on the other side of the stage.

Next, Tim and Faith started their first duet of the night. They came together three times during the evening. It gave the show a brisk pace. Faith's set was about an hour long, running through her big hits and giving her spin on a couple gospel songs.

After disappearing for a second, Faith re-emerged from beneath the stage for her solo set, this time rising into the center of the stage. The stage was a circle with four platforms extending to each side of the arena. It was made so there were a lot of good seats.

tf4.jpg

After each song, the crowd really gave it up for Faith. So much so that it was surprising. She genuinely seemed to appreciate all the love, too. She was really spunky, bouncing around the stage with a lot of energy.

tf5.jpg

Faith's band had 10 people, including three back-up singers. They were pretty active, too, moving around to all corners of the stage, making sure to get up-front with the crowd when Faith was all the way across the stage.

tf6.jpg

Honestly, I was surprised at Faith's voice. I had heard her pipes weren't that strong. At first, it seemed that way. But as the show went on, she let go and proved she could sing.

tf7.jpg

Both Tim and Faith made a point to walk around to each of the four corners of the stage and shake hands with hungry fans.

tf8.jpg

Faith's set ended with "Piece of My Heart," which turned into an all-out jam session, with members of her band pouncing around the stage. I always love it when artists take their hits and play different, longer, versions of them. It gives us something we can't hear on the CD.

After a break that lasted a couple minutes, Tim and Faith again rose from underneath the stage. This time they were covered by two curtains, complete with some visual effects. There wasn't too much of that stuff, nothing close to crazy staging, lighting and prop tricks that we saw when Madonna came to town.

tf10.jpg

Faith left and Tim took his turn doing his solo thing. The crowd, obviously, was thrilled. He did about an hour too, running through most of his big hits. "Indian Outlaw" was a noticeable exception.

tf11.jpg

Tim didn't have the energy of Faith, but he danced around a bit and made the rounds of the stage, even dipping into the crowd for a few minutes, putting himself with in arm's reach of plenty of rabid ladies.

tf12.jpg

He made a point of talking about his band right away. Much of the band, Tim said, has been playing with him for 17 years, back when they were driving themselves to gigs in their touring van.

tf13.jpg

When Tim sang "Live Like You Were Dying," the lights dimmed and all these light structures moved down the stage, looking like legs of an octopus. Pretty trippy.

tf14.jpg

As you can tell, there was hardly an empty seat in the house. However, because of the big staging, I doubt it will break the Save Mart Center attendance record of 14,940, set by Prince in 2004. In-the-round shows are always able to hold more people than concerts where the stage is at one end of the floor. In-the-round shows always seem to be better, too.

tf15.jpg

Faith joined Tim again at the end, doing another duet set for about 15 minutes. All in all, they performed together for about 45 minutes. They ended their nearly three-hour set with a cover of "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley. After that, the duo came back for an encore, which finished with a kiss. Awwww.

I don't even care about country music, and I found this entertaining. Nice photojournalism, Mike Oz.

Well, those were the good ones. There were some not so good ones. Lots, actually. I'm still way amateur.
