Fighting back against dumping
People routinely discard garbage -- everything from tires to refrigerators -- along rural roads throughout Fresno County's 6,000 square miles. County officials, fed up with the costly problem of illegal dumping, plan to fight back. Look for an article in Sunday's Bee.
You see the problem every day, share with us where the problem spots are: leave a comment or send photos. We'll help keep the conversation going.

Comments:
One of the worst places for illegal dumping is on North Ave between Cornelia and Chateau Fresno, along the south side of the water treatment plant. What's needed to curtail the illegal dumping are sub-stations where people can take their excess trash, old furniture, appliances and/or green waste without having to go the 30 miles or more to the county dump site. At the sub-stations the waste could be sorted and sent to the appropriate dump for disposal.

When our brilliant board of supervisors here in the great county of Fresno made their oh so wise decision to unify garbage service, the illigal dumping got worse than ever. I live near Caruthers, and it is common to see trash thrown on the side of the road, however, now that the rates for garbage service have nearly DOUBLED, I feel like I live in a dump. EVERY morning there is new trash out on my way to work. It makes me sick to see. I hope that our supervisors are happy with their decision, not only has my bill gone up $32.00 a month, but my country drive has turned into a blighted trashpile! Thanks ladies & gentlemen so very much

Catholic Charities has a HUGE problem with illegal dumping at our Fresno location at 149 N. Fulton Street. Nearly every morning we face some sort of "dump" and especially on the weekends. The dumping has gotten particularly bad this spring and summer. As a non-profit organization we cannot afford the fees to haul the stuff to the dump every week and yet we cannot operate with all the junk on our docks. The other problem that stems from the dumping is that the homeless take up residence on the newly dumped furniture nearly every weekend and the unsanitary conditions are a real problem for our Food Bank.
I would welcome any questions or a site visit if you are able.

Ellendale and Ashlan is also a terrible place for dumping. This small road(Ellendale)is the easiest access into our development so it is heavily used. Most of the dumping goes on in the middle of the night, because I've never actually seen anyone dumping, but there is always something new in the morning when we drive through. I think I've seen everything dumped there, boxes and bags of garbage, mattresses, couches, waterheaters, toilets, showers, and even burnt out cars. It would be great if the city would pay closer attention to this area. It seems because we are on the west side of the city, that little attention is paid to our needs. The streets over here are always covered in weeds and road repair is rare. Although the population of the westside of Fresno is growing like crazy, the city is paying little attention to our needs, ignoring the garbage dumping is just another example of this neglect.
