Rogue: "Lost and Found on the 99"
You've heard about "Dancing With the Stars," but what about "Dancing With Chairs and Fruit?"
Eclectic local dance troupe Baba For Now brings back its dancing-with-chairs and tossing-around-fruit multimedia theater show, "Lost and Found on the 99," for this year's Rogue Festival.
A favorite at the 2004 Rogue, this bizarre show bringing together video images, music and dance while exploring the oddities of Highway 99, has been revitalized for 2006.
Maybe some things should stay in the vault.
There's no doubt that it's strange. That much is admitted. The question then, is: Is it any good?
Some people seemed to love it; the large crowd was laughing to no end.
Maybe it's just me, but choreographed chair-rolling? Handing out bologna sandwiches? Not so much.
The storytelling was vivid The writing was decent. And I dug the music.
But other than that, the whole thing seemed like it was trying much too hard to be different -- with no real point to the weirdness.
You can always see for yourself: "Lost and Found on the 99," plays again at 7 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Dianna's Studio North.

Hi Mike
Have you ever been to Mammoth Orange on Highway 99? The fruit and sandwiches were an affectionate reference to that funky stop in Madera. Glad you enjoyed the music and writing!

I understood the reference. I've driven past that place numerous times. But like I said, it felt like the whole thing was just trying too hard.
