Rogue: "Here and Now"

If you've been in a relationship, then the banter, arguments and drama of "Here and Now" will sound all too familiar.

"Here and Now," writer/director Nicolette Tempesta's one-act play on the Rogue Festival's mainstage at Starline, explores interpersonal relationships through a series of awkward (and sometimes humorous) situations between longtime friends Zoe and Daniel.

The pair venture to the forest for a three-day trip, where their goal is to respectfully scatter the ashes of their recently deceased friend Evan, whom we learn was the duo's partner in crime in their plentiful partying young adult years.

In the process of paying tribute to their friend, Zoe (played by Jennifer Hurd-Peterson) and Daniel (Keshawn Keene), go through an hour-long roller coaster ride that exemplifies their friendship. They have sex, fight, make-up, fight more, ponder why they could never work as a couple and eventually come to terms with their turbulent relationship.

Zoe is over-analytical, over-pronounced, idealist looking for love, but ending up too often in the "friend zone." Daniel is laid-back, a non-committal go-with-the-flow kinda guy. Each thinks the other is a mess.

They spend the hour reminiscing, bickering and trying to expose each other's faults while repressing their own feelings for each other. Along the way, Zoe and Daniel (and hopefully the crowd) learn a little something about themselves and the way their handle relationships.

"Here and Now" plays again at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. March 11 at Starline.
