Brian Kenney Fresno is … Fresno

396025_532130910138890_461907083_nBrian Kenney Fresno is the city’s self-styled musical ambassador. He of the Warr guitar and cape (he wears a cape) has traveled the nation spreading word of our raisins and weather and burrito makers.

After reading about the city’s first poet laureate (and his poem “Fresno, California. 2013″), Kenney Fresno sent me his own verse, inspired by our hometown. It’s a slightly bleaker take on the city’s triumphs and struggles, but you have to love the refrain.

Fresno: “Apart from truth and perception perfection in every way”

Seriously, I’m putting that on a T-shirt.

Fresno
“Be World Class, Be Fresno!”
was recently floated as the new city motto
but it showed the agents of reality
had been incommunicado
though never ever meant to be made public
NO it was only to encourage positive thinking
but I’ve lived in this town for 42 years
and I can’t imagine what they were smoking

Land of the Chupacabra
Homeland of Bobby Salazar
Birthplace of Alvin And The Chipmunks
Reluctant hot bed of crank heads stealing cars

Some times it just doesn’t get any better folks
Other times it couldn’t get any worse
Living your life in Fresno can be both a blessing and a terrible thing

So come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
A culture of excellence where everyone gets the best every day
come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
Apart from truth and perception perfection in every way

Stomping grounds of William Saroyan
Who wouldn’t pick up his Pulitzer Prize
Said “Writing’s what I do”
Ongoing home of Brian Kenney Fresno
The under-rated genius that towers over all of you

Now don’t get me started on the gang warfare
Or the way we beat, I mean treat the homeless it’s so unfair
We used to be the intravenous drug capitol of the nation
But now it seems like no one cares

So come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
A culture of excellence where everyone gets the best every day
come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
Apart from truth and perception perfection in every way

From the sprawl of the north-east expansion
To Chateau de Fresno out by Kearney Mansion
It’s a semi-tropical paradise of grape vines and fruit trees
That few of us ever sees
And the orchards seem so endless and the soy sways in the sun
You can dump your meth lab chemicals while Shy Girl shoots her gun

At the psychedelic patterns that form out in the fields
As you fly past the junk heaps that line Highway 99

It’s where the city banks development that turns to urban blight
It’s where the police chief runs the whole show
And shuts the town down at night

Gateway to the scenic Southern Sierra
On the banks of the once mighty San Joaquin
It’s a cornucopia of agricultural splendor
The likes of which the work has never seen

So seductive in the springtime
Fantastic in the fall
It’s where rural life meets suburbia with a cow pasture and a mall
Highways that led to nowhere now infected with urban sprawl
It’s where the red necks meet the yuppies
And Jesus Christ rules them all

…and it gets really hot

Though we love to chide and deride you
Your charms are many and in-explicable
Just like the way people lump us in with Bakersfield
Is so annoying as the comparison’s inapplicable

Life is a lot like what you make it
Doesn’t really matter where you live
What’s important is what you have to offer
And to offer all you can give

So come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
A culture of excellence where everyone gets the best every day
come to Fresno
Go To Fresno
Apart from truth and perception perfection in every way

I’d like to add a comment, just to show support, but I can’t really comment on the work, cuz it is what it is…and Brian keeps doing what he does, and does it so powerfully, and for that we are happy and we are challenged.

Here’s a comment on the fact that this was a fresnobeehive post: I like that it’s a post about someone like BKF that is working and has worked in our community (and all over the place). It’s not a post about an event, or an opening, or a new thing, it’s just a post about something that *is*. So: cool.

Congrats to our poet laureate and to Fresno for having one. And thanks to Brian for keeping it real. So much beauty and potential here along with frequent difficulties facing up to our shortcomings so it’s nice to see commentary addressing both.

Michael Medrano says:

Congrats to James Tyner, good friend, and Fresno’s very first poet laureatte. And congrats to Brian Kinney for his ambitious poem. I look forward to your performance at the Beatdown Slam!

Malcolm Sosa says:

All must bow down and worship Brian Kenney Fresno. He is Fresno.
