ROGUE REVIEW: Rock and Soul Show

Ten. That’s about the time I went to bed the night before and fell asleep listening to a Coast to Coast radio program about a young man who had fallen into demonic possession. Hallelujah, then, that I had the opportunity to hear the “Rock and Soul Show” on Saturday.
Ten. Plus one. That’s the number of musicians and vocalists performing Rock, Rhythm & Blues and Soulfoul standards with ‘the message’ and who make up The First Men of Promise — the first Christian band taking part in the Rogue Festival.
Ten. Songs that take you on an hour-long spiritual that are performed with just the right amount of cowbell. I especially enjoyed the group’s rendition titled ‘Jesus Christ’s Salvation’ sung and performed in the stylings of the 1969 classic by Tommy James & The Shondells’ ‘Crystal Blue Persuasion’ — it’s faithfully rendered.
Ten. That’s what I’m giving it. Cost is 7 Rogue Bucks and well worth the price – even if you are a non-Christian, you may enjoy this Fresno band’s uplifting sound. ‘The Men’ have been jammin’ together for the last ten years and are members of The First Church of Promise.
