My spy at the awards ceremony for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival regional competition in Los Angeles tells me it’s a Fresno State theater department sweep: Ryan Woods and Myles Bullock captured the two top acting awards and will both compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C. Daniel Rodriguez, a third Fresno State student, was named alternate. Plus: Fresno City College student Mohammad Shehata wins theater criticism award, also getting a trip to D.C.
Rodriguez won the regional competition’s Classical Acting Award.
Not sure if this is unprecedented in Fresno State theater history to send TWO finalists to D.C.. (plus the alternate!) but it’s a major achievement. (Update: Fresno State theater professor Brad Myers writes:” This is definitely unprecedented in Fresno State history. Also, no other college/university in the region has ever won all four of these awards in the same year.”)
Bullock’s scene partner, Molly Kelly, and Woods’ scene partner, Taylor Abels, also will go to Washington. There will be quite a contingent of Fresnans competing at our nation’s capital.
Jacob Rico, another Fresno State student, won the award for Best Actor in a New Play performed at the festival.
Here’s a photo of Woods and Abels taken after they learned they’re going to the nationals. (Thanks to Ashley Taylor.)
Another pic after the jump.
