If this were a Fresno State sports story, The Bee would probably be contemplating a special section in celebration. Out of 16 regional finalists in this weekend’s Kennedy Center Region VIII Irene Ryan acting competition, four are from Fresno State. As theater professor Brad Myers writes on Facebook:
Yes, it’s true! One out of every four regional finalists is from our university!!! The most of any school in the region!
Region VIII includes colleges and universities from Arizona, Central and Southern California, Hawaii, Southern Nevada and Utah. Fresno State’s four finalists is an amazing result in a very tough region.
Here are the four with their acting partners:
Myles Bullock (partner Molly Kelly)
Dane Oliver (partner Shelby Art)
Daniel Rodriguez (partner Matthew Schiltz)
Ryan Woods (partner Taylor Abels)
Two performers and their scene partners from each region are invited to attend the national competition of the American College Theater Festival at the Kennedy Center April 16-21 in Washington, D.C.
I’m told there’s a whole group of fans heading down today to the regional finals at the Los Angeles Theater Center to cheer on the Fresno State finalists.
Fresno State has a long tradition of sending regional winners to the national festival, including Matthew McGee, Brandon Petrie, Ferin Petrelli and Blake Ellis. (Updated to include Petrie and Petrelli as recent regional winners.)
Congratulations to all four finalists. Y’all won’t get a special section, but I’ll be anxious to hear the results.
