Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

While pondering a downtown public market.

1. HAVE AN UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT
NYC hip-hop duo Camp Lo — famous for their stellar 1997 album, “Uptown Saturday Night” — are at Fulton 55 on Saturday as part of the anniversary tour for the album. It’s a cool gig, particularly if you’ve never seen “Luchini” pour from the sky. [More]

2. BE THE HUNTER, NOT THE HUNTED
Chick-rockers Hunter Valentine return to Audie’s Olympic on Sunday night, as they continue toward “break-out” status. The band got a big boost when it was featured on Showtime’s “The Real L Word” and has been busy since then, having appeared in Fresno previously in October and now touring with Sum 41. They’re here on an off-night from the tour. [More]

3. JOIN THE YOUTH MOVEMENT
Kuppajoe has a cool show tonight for its all-ages music lovers. Sacramento’s K-Sera visits town, while a trio of young indie/pop local acts join in on the fun. [More]

4. COVER YOUR BASES
The next Fresno Covers Fresno benefit concert — financing a compilation of local artists covers songs by other local artist — is Saturday night at Tokyo Garden and has a stellar lineup of local acts. [More]

5. ADD SOME LATIN FLAVOR TO YOUR WEEKEND
Star Palace hosts popular local big band The Joe Lenigan Band on Sunday afternoon for a concert with a Latin twist. There’s also a dancing contest for cash, so bring your dancing shoes. Tickets are free. Here’s the catch, though: You have to pick them up at Arte Americas, home of the “American Sabor: Latinos in Popular U.S. Music” exhibit brought to Fresno by the Smithsonian (which closes Jan. 20, btw). Hey, I try to join the hip generation but they see my gray hair and kick my butt out of the clubs. What’s hot for us baby boomers?

That Joe Lenigan Big Band show should be a good one.

Or you could check out the “Donald’s weekend picks” post, which tends to skew older. (Shameless plug.)

Thanks for mentioning the Fresno Covers Fresno gig. One of the cool things about this project (in my opinion), is that it gets local bands to listen or re-listen to some of their fellow travellers…. AND in gigs like this, I get to , not only enjoy my already-faves like The Sunburns and I Do Not Exist…but to discover for myself a band that I hadn’t heard yet, like Sci-Fi Caper (loved ‘em!)…As the lady from I.D.N.E. said from the stage: ‘I can’t wait for this compilation to come out!”…Expect at least one more show in support…and then, of course…the release show. Oh yeah!
