Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

In addition to remembering Corby Yates.

1. HONOR THE DEAD, BRING YOUR FRIDAY NIGHT TO LIFE
Today is Arte Americas big ol’ annual Dia De Los Muertos (aka The Day of the Dead) celebration. The event starts with a procession from the Fulton Mall to Arte. Then there’s music, food, dance and museum exhibits. Be sure to check out Donald Munro’s story too. [More]

2. GET SOME HONEY AT CROSS POLLINATE
The Soulflower Group gives us its spin on a singles mixer. It’s called Cross Pollinate and it’s happening tonight at Fulton 55. Eligible bachelors fill out surveys and create bento boxes that represent themselves, and women choose their best matches. The Soulflower Group has a rep for great events, and this looks like it has the potential to be another one. [More]

3. OINK IT UP WITH KEITH
I’ve made no secret about my fandom for Keith’s BoxCar Cafe, the cafe and barbecue spot nestled in the industrial section of downtown. Keith’s usually only open on the weekdays, but every once in a while, he does a special weekend event. This Saturday, he’s smoking an entire pig and letting people come eat it from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. He’s staying up all night to make it delicious. He did this a couple months ago (that’s the pic below), and trust me, it was tasty.  [More]

4. A RARE NIGHT AT AUDIE’S
Super solid show Saturday night at Audie’s Olympic. Rare Monk visits from Portland — their drummer, Rick Buhr, used to live in Kerman. That’s not all, though. Also playing are three stellar local groups: Session, Sea of Sound and I Do Not Exist. [More]

5.  REMEMBER HOW DOPE MAC MALL USED TO BE
Fifteen-year-old Mike Oz would not let me write this post without giving a shout out to Mac Mall, the man behind one of my favorite rap albums of all time, “Illegal Business.” He’s in Visalia tonight. Sure, Mr. Mall is a bit more ridiculous these days (before you say anything, he’s got a parrot on this shoulder, case closed). But he’s still the dude who gave us “Ghetto Theme” and “My Opinion.” (hella NSFW, btw) [More]
