The Beehive Asks: Does ‘We Are The World’ redux inspire you to donate to Haiti?
As you may have heard, a bunch of singers (and Vince Vaughn) came together to lend their voices and their starpower to a rerecording of “We Are The World” in an effort to raise funds for the rebuilding of Haiti.
Here is their effort:
“We Are The World” was written 25 years ago by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Since its release in 1985, the original single has raised over $63 million for aid in Africa.
So what I’m wondering is, will this recording have the same effect as the original, inspiring people to open up their wallets and give, or have we all become a little too cynical for this kind of thing?
How many of you have purchased or plan to purchase the single, and how many of you would rather pay to never hear this song again?
(By the way, if you are in a giving mood after seeing this video, you may do so here.)

I bet if they just passed around an envelope they could pitch in way more cash than this song will ever make in the next 25 years.
I defer to MikeOz regarding the song.
There were parts I liked and parts I really didn’t like, but overall this song doesn’t make me want to donate a nickle.
I didn’t really care about Africa 25 years ago but I bought that record for myself and all my friends AND the video when it came out because it was so new and interesting and featured all those stars I could relate to.
I think in this one they’re trying to please everyone with the star choices and in doing so might be pleasing no one.
You know, I still prefer the UK’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas(Feed the World)” tune that inspired this one.
I mean…the ‘mericans really know how to get the superstars all together and make it all marketable and such, but if you play around on youtube and compare the two 80′s efforts you’ll see what I mean. The Brits beat us by having a cooler song.
Maybe it was time to write a new one.
And, with Axe Body Spray dominating the Grammys and such, maybe it’s time to completely abandon Hollywood and send Fresno to the rescue.
I would pay to see/hear less of the Pussycat Doll (why is Nicole ALL over it?!), Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, the “rap” in the middle, Wyclef’s screaming/screeching when he’s not saying Haiti, T-Pain’s modulation…and WTF with Jamie Foxx doing Ray Charles?
My old 45 of that song was worn out when I finally retired/accidentally cracked it…it was one of my most prized possessions in my youth, one of the greatest, most inspirational songs ever, I played it over and over and over again. It was an anthem. This version was just kinda weird. It would have been amazing with just P!nk and Jennifer Hudson–those two girls can sang!
PS–I wonder if Kenny Rogers and Cyndi Lauper were sad they didn’t get invited back this time around?
PPS–Who was the blonde white lady at the beginning before Josh Groban?
PPPS–I would totally buy it if they released it on a 45.
Your comment makes me think of all the movies they’ve been making lately — Alvin and the Chipmunks, G.I. Joe, the Karate Kid, etc — that are all designed to play off our childhood nostalgia. Sure, they’re kind of the same, but there’s something missing, something that can’t be captured in a remake, like, initial wonder and newness or something.
This rerecording is Alvin and the Chipmunks. (But for a good cause)
Erin D got it right. Cut out all the awful stuff and I’d buy it for sure.
The woman before Josh Groban is Jennifer Nettles. Yes, I had to look it up.
I was impressed with the vocals of Miley Cyrus and Fergie (keeping up with Celine Dion), but Pink has always been a fantastic singer (witness ‘Lady Marmalade’).
I wish we could abolish auto tune forever.
if i buy the original does it still donate money to africa relief?
as for this one, i was a little confused by the random stars in it until i was watching the first one and stuff on how it was made and saw that they had similar random stars back then, too.
i still haven’t listened to the song, but i’m not inclined to buy it to help haiti. not that i don’t want to help haiti, but i think i’d rather donate directly to agencies than buy a song.
Watch what Fresno did for Haiti. Rock for Haiti Benefit at the Starline Video. Watch here!
On the charity side, I think everyone should help out a little. Even a little goes along way right now.
to the song.
I have to admit, the first time I thought some of it was cheezy. I felt kinda guilty that I was snickering while watching it ..as a whole it just doesn’t feel authentic.
I really enjoyed hearing Jennifer Hudson singing though, man..that girl can sing. I wanna hear the whole thing just sung by her.
Akon had me rolling
i just downloaded this song.
I would pay to never hear this song. The original is a classic. What about a song to raise money for the people here at home, USA?? People need help here as well?
