SciFi Channel now 27% less watchable, and that’s saying something
Allow me to let my nerd flag fly for a moment, won’t you?
It annoys the s*** out of me that the SciFi Channel has changed its name to Syfy.
Apparently, abbreviating the too-geeky phrase “science fiction” to SciFi wasn’t hip enough, so the name had to be dumbed down yet further to trick the masses into tuning in to reruns of “Battlestar Galactica” and “Stargate SG-1.” What annoys me most is the fact that my brain chooses to read “Syfy” as Sy-fee, and I refuse to watch a channel called “The Sy-fee Channel.”
I’m also irritated that Bravo has changed its tagline from “Only on Bravo” to “Only by Bravo,” but since I expect Bravo to try too hard to be original, this doesn’t bother me as much. Not as much as, say, losing “Project Runway” to Lifetime, for crap’s sake.
Admitting publicly that I watch both Syfee and Lifetime has pretty much guaranteed that I’ll be single for the rest of my life, but at least I’ll have my television to keep me company. From here on out, however, it will be tuned to TNT and the Weather Channel, at least until it changes its name to the “The W.C.” or “Temps.”

Thank you Heather…the SciFi thing has had me on edge this week. Imagine when I tune in to watch Ghost Hunters on syfy (I think it is prounounced siffy)…WTF! What self respecting channel does this to its viewers? Don’t even get me started on PR and Lifetime!
The Siffy channel jumped way back when they started airing wrestling.
Eventually it will morph into a USA-network clone, generic tv, showing nothing but Law and Order reruns.
Well not going to say that I will stop watching SyFy for changing their name but I also found it a little strange that it was changed to SyFy. What brain child thought of that but all of the greats have thought of bad marketing ideas just look at coke with new coke. The channel has not changed still a great channel.
SyPhee is dumb…why can’t people think about how things will be pronounced. It’s like the Fultonia project under development. The developer want to called that area SoTow (as in South Tower). Is it pronounced Sew Toe (that makes it South of Toe-er) or Sow Tao (which will align better with South of Tower)…I like the development, just not the made up name.
I don’t like the SighPhee channel…regardless of the name.
The fact that SyFy airs wrestling on Tuesday nights negates any creditability it may have had.
They changed the name so they would have something to trademark and market willy-nilly–”SciFi” is a genre, and can’t be a brand name. I, uh, follow the network on Twitter (blushing), and they had a LOT of questions about this.
I agree. So dumb.
Doesn’t matter why they did it, the name is plain DUMB. They need to find new marketing people.
They can call it all they want, as long as they keep Ghost Hunters.
They also changed the name to better appeal to the women demographic. The same reason Crime TV changed to Tru TV.
Its a branding move. And you would be surpised how many women actually watch both of these networks.
You could get rid of your TV altogether.
They should have asked women how they feel about the perceived notion that cutesy names are attractive to them.
I have to imagine that the woman who loves the name “Syfy” is never going to tune in to watch “Ghost Hunters” or “Mansquito,” and that the woman who does tune in to watch these things (me) finds the new name insulting.
I was wondering about the change this last weekend when watching some B S. King flick… thanks for the clear up
