Fres-Know: In which I express nothing but love for CBS47′s Mike Scott

It’s all the local news and stuff from the blogosphere that you need to Fres-Know (shout-out to our new blog roll, which makes this post that much more fun to write).

OH SNAP! Mike Scott wonders if The Fresno Bee is worth the price. Funny, I’ve been wondering the same thing about local TV news for years. [CBS47]

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID: Where have all the swallows gone? (Seriously, start reading Mr. Scott’s blog immediately, and regularly.) [CBS47]

NOTHING TO FEAR BUT… Famous Whitewater combats Fresno’s KMJ listeners’ fear of downtown with a collection of pro-downtown media offerings. [Fresno Famous]

IT’S OK TO BE JEALOUS: What’s it like to play catch with members of the Fresno State football team? Blogger DC3 figured you’d want to know, so he videotaped it. [The Bulldog Bounce]

READ, DAMMIT: Are you between the ages of 11 and 19? If so, you really should be reading a more age-appropriate blog. But also: enter to win the Fresno County Library Teen Poetry Book Naming Contest (there’s a prize!) [Fresno Teens.org]

YE-HAAAW: Wondering how to dispose of all those used batteries you’re not supposed to throw in the trash? It’s a battery round-up, y’all. [Green Fresno]

KISS MY FATOUSH: Baseball season’s coming up, so you’re probably looking for a new Chuk Park-adjacent restaurant, right? Just in time, foodie James Collier gives you the lowdown on Kebab Xpress. [TasteFresno]

THERE-MAN: Theremin wizard (and Beehive fave) Blake Jones has a new CD for sale. Grab a copy subito before the Italians snatch them all up. [Fresno Famous]

BIG FOOT, BIG… SHOES: Is Bigfoot living locally? More importantly, is he spending locally? [Weird Fresno]

NOTOWN? YES, PLEASE: Couldn’t make it to Saturday night’s NoTown Roller Derby bout? Ed Luv braves a bewheeled beauty beatdown with his review of the new(ish) team and its new venue. [estewartartist]

BETTER LATE THAN: The Dumb Drum podcast turns a year old! Uhhh… over a month ago. Happy Anniversary, kids. [The Dumb Are Mostly Intrigued By The Drum]

Mike Scott says:

“Snap!” Heather… I haven’t stopped laughing since I read your post! Or should I say – I found it hard to “swallow!” Hey! I love the Bee! Don’t you think I made a legitimate point in my original blog post, that I should get what I paid for? If I renew my subscription for six months, then after I’ve paid – the Bee tells me that the paper will be smaller, with less color, and I’m guessing – probably less local content (because of all the layoffs) – shouldn’t I be offered something in return? A small extension in my subscription? A rebate? Free tickets to the Jonas Brothers concert? Ha! Love ya, Heather! And Oz, too!

Roopam47 says:

Lord. Now we’ll be hearing about swallows all day.

Heather says:

@Mike Scott: Not being a Bee employee, I have full freedom to speak to the point you made in your blog. But I won’t.

However, I will say this: Keep up the good work, sir. Your enthusiasm for the blogging medium is unparalleled in the Central Valley.

@Roopam: Sorry, sister. It was too good to pass up.

brodiemash says:

Just what I needed on my Monday morning: Beehive/CBS47 BLOG WAR! And as for the podcast, better late than never, right?! Probably not. Thanks for the kind words!

ed says:

hmac,
just to be clear, are you asking whether or not local tv is worth the free you’re paying?

because if so, that’s a great insult.

Heather says:

@Ed: Yes. But I prefer to see it as a gentle ribbing and not an insult.

Mike Scott says:

Brodiemash: A Blog War? Nay! A friendly exchange of ideas between great minds! Ha!

Donald Munro says:

@Heather: I’ll wade in here and back you up. I had to laugh at this comment from another 47 staffer on Mike’s blog:

Andrew Marden said:
That’s a good point! I personally don’t read The Fresno Bee that much, and when I do I usually just read what I want online…

My response: How about an experiment? Channel 47 goes cold turkey on The Bee for two weeks. Not a copy allowed inside the newsroom, no one reads it at home, no Web access and — most important — the assigning editor/producer doesn’t get a glimpse in the morning. Everything gets done from scratch. I think that Mike S. would realize that a subscription is well worth it, even if the comics ARE in black and white.

blake says:

Thank you Heather for the mention of the CD!

The only thing more fun than getting a positive review from thousands of miles away, is to crack up at the web-translation.

If BeehiveReaders are interested in scoring the CD, it’s only a quick complusive mouse-click away at:

Conlan says:

What, my song in your honor isn’t enough to get Fres-Know’d? I get it, you don’t want to toot your own horn. It’s fine. Maybe I’ll just go start my own Fresno entertainment blog instead…

Mike Scott says:

Donald: I’m the first to admit that all tv stations rely heavily on local papers for story ideas. But that’s not the issue here. The original issue I raised has to do with – getting what you pay for. When I renewed my home subscription recently, I was expecting one thing. Now, it turns out I’m getting something else – a smaller, less colorful Bee, with a much reduced staff. Was there any mention when I renewed – that the paper would be shrinking – or that my dollars would be buying less? No. Bottom line? Be happy I’m still a subscriber! Yes, I read the Bee’s on-line version, but at home – on weekends – I want to hold the paper – enjoy the COLOR comics – clip coupons – and of course, Donald… read your insightful reviews of local events! O.K. Can I go home now? I’ve been up since 2am! Later…

brodiemash says:

@Mike Scott: I don’t know man, this is looking like it’s heading towards an inevitable…..BLOG WAR!!!!!

@Donald Munro: Tell ‘em why you mad, sun!

@brodiemash: Please stop starting s#@t on the Beehive.

james says:

Thanks for all the local link love, Heather. We independent bloggers and media folk recognize that you’ll all work for us eventually…

Donald Munro says:

@Mike S.: I’m in no way trying to sugarcoat the cuts at the Bee. But in response to your question about getting what you paid for: Technically speaking, you paid for a subscription to the Fresno Bee, and that’s what you’re still going to get. Newspapers make changes all the time, some for the good, some for the bad, but in the end, you’re buying a package product. I guess you have to decide if it’s still a value to you. It’d be like if you subscribe to HBO and love a certain show, and then you find out that the show is cancelled. Do you keep HBO or pull the plug?

Heather says:

@Ed: Where are my props for not using Bee links? You bitched about that last time, so I will patiently sit here and wait for you to acknowledge my use of other sources.

Michael says:

@brodiemash: Are you trying to take away my spot as the instigator on the Hive? It’s on!!

How’s that for a blog war?

And HMac thanks for the plug. I always get more hits when you guys mention me, which proves more than my mother reads my blog. I owe ya a drink next time I see you.

Robb says:

I could not imagine a world without a newspaper. The Fresno Bee in the morning is a ritual. I love walking outside and picking up my paper on the doorstep, even if the guy throws it in the flower bed. It will always be worth the price. Its just not the same experience reading the paper online. The Beehive is the only reason I check out the Bee online, keep it up.

ed says:

hmac,
you know what, good for you. kudos for linking mainly to blogs not paid for by mcclatchy news services. really, i’m happy to see the diversity in the links, and some new ones as well.

i haven’t looked @ mike scott’s blog in a while. when i had before it was just a scrambled mess that needed some filtering, imho. so, maybe i’ll have to see if it’s in better shape now. i mean, it does have hmac’s seal of approval.

finally, my nom de plume is edluv, sans spaces. thanks for the link. i hope i’m not beaten by any of the derby team. i think my review was pretty fair. and i learned on teh internets today that last time these teams played short fuse from reno spat at or on someone. ding dang! that’s way better than a little old blog war.

Marietta says:

Whether it’s print or online, The Bee is still The Bee. Fresnobee.com launched nearly 15 years ago. For the longest time, Interactive Media wasn’t feelin’ the love. Now everyone is looking to these online gurus to bravely lead the way through the changing landscape of news delivery. I want The Bee and Fresnobee.com to continue publishing content regardless of the delivery platform, and I would have no problem paying for it. Thank you to Mike S. and Heather for starting the conversation, which btw, would not be happening if we were television-only or newspaper-only.
