One week in Fresno
Earlier this week I found myself out and about two nights in a row. The next day I came to the realization that I could try and put that old “there’s nothing to do in Fresno” adage to the test, Mythbusters-style, to see if it holds up. As a bonus, I’d keep track of what I spent, to see if good times could be had on the cheap.
Let’s see how I did.
Monday: Pecha Kucha Night
Spent most of the evening at Starline enjoying presentations from ten Fresno designers, then headed slightly south to hear Johnny Q spin at Veni Vidi Vici’s.
Total spent: $2
Tuesday: St. Patrick’s Day
Listened to Songs4Pints do the Irish thing at Starline Grill.
Total spent: $9.75 for two pints
Wednesday: John West show
Spent the evening at Palomino’s with two fine, fine people: Ms. Soulflower, who spun inside while John West crooned out on the patio:
Total spent: $0
Thursday: Flashback Features
Felt the need. The need for some silver screen bromance speed. Checked out pre-crazy Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” the greatest volleyball-scene-having movie from the 80s (and that’s saying a lot).
Total spent: $5
Friday: Vintage Fridays
Friday is just beginning, but to cap off my week, I’ll be hanging out tonight with Mike Oz as he goes way, way back to the 90s at Palomino’s.
Total spent: Like the flier says, zero duckets (aka free)
So there it is, kids: if you’re bored in Fresno, then you’re boring. All told, I managed to be entertained five days in a row for about $17. And just think — that was during the work week.
So what am I doing next week? Any suggestions?

Awesome!! See there is always something to do in fresno!
Thanks for the shout out…
Duckets? Little quackers, eh?
Maybe ducats?
Ooops, I’m getting as sarcastic as HM.
that john west show was a real treat too…. something that wouldn’t happen in la or sf without a cover charge at the door methinks
Nicely done!!
Heather thanks for coming to Pecha Kucha and snapping photos.
Next weekend Roosevelt School of the Arts’ production of Epic Proportions opens. There will be shows March 27 and 28 @ 7:30pm and March 29 @ 2:00pm. There are four more shows the next weekend, too.
General tix cost $10, seniors/students/FUSD employees only $5. Keep in mind that comic genius John Landis is in production of a feature film version due out next year. So see it here first!
I don’t know about you, but I’m going to the No Town Roller Derby bout on Saturday night! I’ll also be attending the new exhibit at the Met sometime this weekend and visiting my friend Doug Hansen at his booksigning on Saturday at Petunia’s Place.
After reading Oz’ write-up about No Town Derby, my kiddo and I decided we are going to CHECK IT OUT! It will set me back about 12 bucks and the kiddo is free.
oh hmac, you miser you. while you could do all of those things for free or next to free, most of the businesses are putting on those events to generate income.
Yeah, Ed, I get that businesses don’t put on events solely out of the goodness of their hearts.
However, if someone is short on cash or say, unemployed, it’s nice to know there are still options for entertainment that extend beyond sitting at home surfing the Internet.
What I can’t give in cash, I try to make up for by word-of-mouth or by encouraging my friends who do have disposable income to join me on these outings.
Oh, and props to everyone who came out to Palomino’s last night — what a blast. We definitely will do that again at next month’s Vintage Fridays.
Is anybody still ignorant enough to say “There’s nothing to in Fresno.”? I think those people have moved away or something, I just don’t hear it anymore…but maybe I live in a pro-Fresno bubble or something.
Great idea for a post, btw. If Heather starts getting passionate about creating more posts about Fresno, local bloggers are in trouble.
Yeah, maddddd props to everyone who came to Vintage Fridays last night. It was a good time.
@ The Fresnan Unfortunately, yes, many of my ignorant students at Fresno State still say there’s nothing to do in Fresno. I love my pro-Fresno bubble in real life, but during the day at the university I’m still in 1999 when it comes to Fres-knowledge.
Ohh, well, thanks for bursting my Fresno bubble, Jefferson.
Do you find yourself getting into discussions with your students about how there is plenty for them to do in Fresno? Maybe it’s tougher for the under 21 crowd. But I think everything in Heather’s post was all ages, sooo. What the hell is their problem, I guess is what I’m saying.
