Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter: Awesome, Lame or Creepy?

The following photo is allegedly the first picture of Johnny Depp starring as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s version of “Alice in Wonderland.” Is it:

A. Awesome.
B. Lame
C. Willy Wonka

I’m going with answer C. He looks like the illegitimate child of the Night Hob and the dude with the racing snail in “The Neverending Story.”

Yeah, I’m gonna say it’s a bit overdone. Of course, I’m all about making Alice in Wonderland about as dark as possible. An R rated version maybe.

Michael says:

I seriously can’t wait for this movie. The story is such a tripped out one anyways and I’m curious to see what Burton does with it.

Plus I like the rest of the cast too. Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, my future wife Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, and Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar.

thought 2.
…now matter HOW weird this guy gets? He’s STILL gonna be a chick-magnet…

(..thank god Jimmy Stewart and Elvis ain’t alive to see this.)

…just can’t figger this out, nope, aint’ even gonna try.

Kiel says:

Heather, good “If they did it…” comparison.

I’m a little tired of Johny Depp’s role as Tim Burton’s goto (crazy) person. Do you think he even had a casting call for the role?

Travis Sheridan says:

@Adam…when “The Movies” was going out of business in the Tower, I bought a great version of “Alice in Wonderland” from the 1970s…and it wasn’t rated “R”…it…is…awesome.

Johnny looks like the love child of Carrot Top and Skeletor.

brodiemash says:

I hope Burton isn’t just gonna turn this into a big screen version of American McGee’s Alice. But Burton does have a history of

Someone recently illustrated the assertion, WT.

Wet Towel: you are absolutely right, no matter how weird, I LOVE HIM!!!!

anything Johnny Depp does is delicious!
Sorry, H, gotta disagree with you on this one!

I cannot wait!!!!!!

H-Drapes says:

I LOVE Tim Burton’s movies! He and Johnny Depp make a great duo in all of his dark and twisted movies. Gotta love it!

And Marie M wants to marry him.

Katie says:

I love Alice in Wonderland. This kinda scares me. Not as much as this though…

Saw it this weekend while shopping in Toys R US.

What’s Depp doing *this* for? I thought he was working on a re-make of Dark Shadows!

slightly off-track:
Did anybody see the band that did music to “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (sp?) at the Rogue Festival?
I didn’t get to, but I recently watched the movie.
*WEiRD* German spooky film from the late 20s….with weird, twisted sets.
VERY Tim Burton.—if you like BUrton, you might wanna check this out for what must be an early influence.

Renee N says:

Hahahaha H the guy from Never Ending Story! :) Ok… I’m super stoked about this, pics like this are always skewed because make up has to be that weird in order for it to play on the camera… so… I’m still a Johnny Depp fan! XD

YAYAYAYAYAYA!!!!!

Oh and Blake, the Rhoda Penmarks played at the Rogue… and I’m getting a copy of their soundtrack with the movie!

I think if Tim Burton were to keel off, Depp might have to endure a long run of unemployment. Hopefully there is a 21 Jump Street movie-adaptation in the works.

Lame. Definitely lame! Lol.

felicia matlosz says:

OMG, if that’s what Depp looks like, what is Alan Rickman going to look like as the hookah-smoking caterpillar?
