Closures hit locally owned restaurants, clubs
It’s been a rough few weeks for local restaurants, bars and nightclubs. You’ve read about some of these closures here at the Beehive, but here’s the final tally:
- Iron Bird Cafe
- Starline Grill
- Victoria Rose Restaurant
- Roe
- Come and Get It Chicken and Waffles
- Bentley’s Steaks Seafood and Ribs
- The Express nightclub
- Thai Palms
They all closed for their own reasons, and you can read more about them in this weekend’s story that takes a look at the problem. The one thing they all have in common is that they’re still struggling with the lackluster economy.
The good news? You can do something about it. Break off the love affair with chain restaurants.
People here will wait an hour to get a table at Olive Garden, yet ignore the chef down the street who graduated from a local high school and who’s creating delicious food with locally sourced veggies and meat.
And this isn’t just me talking. The head of the school for entrepreneurship at Fresno State says that eating at local restaurants obviously keeps them open, but benefits our area’s economy as a whole.

Alas, if incumbent politicians would advocate economic growth rather than higher taxers to continue pandering to their constituencies, perhaps these and other businesses would still be among the living!
did batter up pancakes close a location? I thought I saw a story on fresnobee.com that it did, or it mightve been some other place awhile back
Batter Up Pancakes closed its Figarden Drive location in the fall. Their Cedar and Nees location is still open. It’s the third item down in this column: http://www.fresnobee.com/2012/10/09/3023563/eating-out-familiar-pepa-takes.html#storylink=misearch
Skip Olive Garden go to guiseppe Gallo nees and willow
I just heard about Victoria Rose Cottage. I’m very saddened about this closure… as well as Starline Grill!
