I’m sure many of you are making plans to see “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” in the days to come. (Diehard fans will flock to this evening’s 12:01 a.m. screenings, which will put you out of the movie theater at close to 3 a.m. Good luck at work tomorrow.) I already saw the film and liked it just fine (but didn’t love-love-love it — read my review here.) We have expanded coverage in Friday’s 7 section.
You have some choices in terms of how you see the movie. Here are the options:
- IMAX 3D
- Regular 3D
- High-frame rate 3D
I saw the film in regular 3D, so I didn’t get to experience the high-frame-rate phenomenon that people have talking about for months. Reviews have been mixed about the HFR experience, with some people loving the intensity and the improved 3D effects in darker scenes, and others complaining that it’s cold and looks more like a high-definition TV experience.
As the days go on after the movie opens, the debate will be interesting. There’s only theater in the Fresno-Clovis area offering the HFR screening: Edwards. If you see it there this coming weekend, let me know what you think.
