Win tickets to ‘Next to Normal’

CEK NEXTTONORMAL 04.JPG

I still remember the day: It was 2008, I was in New York scanning the theater listings, and I was looking for an Off-Broadway show I could go see to fill out my play-going schedule. I’d be attending with a friend, and I pitched a show titled “Next to Normal.” I remember telling him, “Well, it’s a musical about a woman who gets electroconvulsive therapy.”

A little bit of a hard sell, maybe, but we went — and loved it. From there, “Next to Normal” made history. It went on to a smash Broadway run and the Pulitzer Prize.

Now it’s in Fresno, with StageWorks Fresno bringing us the local premiere. (The show did mount a national tour, but it skipped us.) “Next to Normal” opens Friday at the state-of-the-art Dan Pessano Theatre (the smaller theater that is part of the Shaghoian Hall complex at Clovis North) and runs through July 29.

I have four tickets to give away to any of the first weekend’s performances. (It plays 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.) Two Beehive commenters selected at random will win a pair of tickets each.

To enter, leave a comment on this post. If you know enough about the show, share your favorite song. Let us know in your comment which performance you’d prefer to attend.

Note: This show is for mature audiences only.

Deadline to enter is 10 a.m. Friday. If you’re a winner, you’ll be able to pick up your tickets at Will Call. We’ll notify the winner via e-mail, so please leave a valid e-mail address and please check it by noon Friday. (We reserve the right to pick another winner if we don’t hear back from you. We had something of a bad situation with our “Spring Awakening” ticket giveaway in which the first winner I selected didn’t check his email address in time and still thought he should be a winner.) You’re ineligible if you’ve won something from us in the past 30 days. No multiple entries allowed. Complete rules after the jump.

I’ve heard all the buzz about this show and it’s been good! I would love to see this show! :D

Manuel Bonilla says:

This is currently my wife’s favorite musical and although I haven’t intently listened to the entire soundtrack, I know enough just from the sheer amount of times I have listened to it while we are cleaning, driving, cooking, or any other time we are within earshot of her iPod and speakers.

In the past I didn’t typically like musicals and often made fun of them, but my wife has really converted me in that area. However, I still poke fun here and there. So since you asked what our favorite song was, I have to say that there are two: “I’m Alive” and “Catch Me I’m Falling”. These songs have provided me many opportunities of word play, to show my wife that I really do listen to her music. “I’m Alive” brings a smile to my face because I always think of my wife singing along with it, in a way that only she can do.

Kelly says:

I haven’t seen the show before but I would love to see it 8pm on Saturday!

Justin Walker says:

I’m definitely going to this show, but I’d like to go for free! My favorite song of the show is actually Song of Forgetting, although I’ve never seen the show, and out of context it’s probably quite different than it is in the actual show.

Jae says:

Sounds interesting!

Andrew says:

Free theatre is always nice!

Jason says:

I saw the promotional video today and thought this would be a great musical to see! The ticket prices are a little steep, but with the talent involved, it seems that it would be well worth the price. I would love to see this show!

Ernie says:

Nice! I’ve never seen this show before. I would prefer the Friday night (Sunday is a second choice).

Bill Wall says:

Kylie says:

I love singing superboy and the invisible girl!! I’d prefer Saturday night.

Cynthia Merrill says:

I would love to see Joel Abels and his daughter, Taylor, in this performance together. Taylor was in my creative dance class when she was little and my studio, the Cynthia Merrill School of Performing Arts, was one of Joel’s first directing experiences. Joel also performed in one play and as the Queen of Hearts in a garden ballet. How time goes by!

Donald Munro says:

I don’t usually jump in with a comment on a giveaway post, but I have to admit I’m really perplexed here: Two readers are complaining how expensive the show is. Was there a misprint somewhere? Are people joking? The way I read it on the show’s website, tickets are $18.50-$23.50. That’s a pretty amazing bargain for a show featuring two professional Equity actors and a live band. In fact, the top price is only a few bucks more than what Fresno state charges for one of its mainstage productions. I think you could easily expect to pay between $40 and $60 for a show with this pedigree in a larger city.

Marci says:

I’d love to go to the Friday performance (:

Bob says:

Never have seen it, would love Sunday show!

Keith says:

cool, tickets yeah!!!

TimY says:

Kim P says:

Pick me! Sunday, please?

Janet says:

I haven’t heard about this musical but would love to get a chance to see it…keeping my fingers crossed!

Amalie Larsen says:

I auditioned for and didn’t get this show. Wah wah….. But, while learning the score, my 3, now 4, year old daughter fell in love with “Superboy and the Invisible Girl”. It’s still in her favorites rotation on her playlist! Any show that can capture young and old alike is worth the $23 ticket price! Friday or Saturday night would be great! BTW- don’t try to bring your 4 year old! We had to edit a lot of the music for our daughters little ears. Lol!

Erin Smith says:

yippeee!!!!!!! tickies!

Kyle says:

Superboy and the Invisible Girl was the first song I had ever heard from it (I think they performed it on Live with Regis and Kelly’s Broadway Week). That song alone mesmerizes me.

Polly Bispo says:

Pick Polly B please! For Sunday! Thanks!

Cameron Briggs says:

I am so excited i hope i win!

Haley W, says:

I just moved to Fresno this spring. I saw Stageworks’ production of Master Class and was blown away; I can’t wait to see one this, too. I don’t really know enough about the show to post my favorite song- I just know that I totally trust Stageworks to deliver the best production of this possible.
If you pick me, I will make any show work!

Christy says:

While I have never heard of this show before, I must say I’m both curious and intrigued! In the 4 years since my adult son was diagnosed with a brain disorder (schizophrenia), I have not only become his full time caregiver/IHSS provider, but also an advocate for mental health awareness as well. I am thankful to organizations (such as NAMI), who strive to educate and help end the negative stigma related to mental illness. I would very much like to see this show. Any date and time works for me :)

William says:

Sounds interesting. I’d be interested in seeing this show. I have no preference to date and time.

M. Figueroa says:

Great to see Joel, Taylor and Daniel in a production!! Reminds me of one of the best shows Joel has directed… Tommy!

Robert says:

I saw this show after Alice Ripley won the Tony!! I was even able to meet her after the show (she was so sweet and hilumble). I would LOVE to see it again tonight!

Amalie says:

Thanks for the tickets! The show was wonderful. What a treat for Fresno audiences. Thanks again,

Johnny says:

SuperBoy and the Invisible Girl is my favorite song! :)

I would love to see the 2pm show on Sunday!!
