Donald’s weekend picks

1. SEE A LOCAL PLAY
I have capsule reviews of The New Ensemble’s “A Picasso” and California Public Theater’s “Lonely Planet” in today’s 7 section. Here’s my extended review of “Picasso” and extended review of “Planet.” And don’t forget: Good Company’s “Skin Deep” is in its opening weekend.

2. CELEBRATE A TALENTED YOUNG PIANIST
Local piano talent Michael Delfin is home from his second year of studies at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory, and he’s sharing his music in a homecoming concert.

3. HEAR THE ‘RED VIOLIN’ AND SEE THE MOVIE

Elizabeth Pitcairn owns the legendary 1720 “Red Mendelssohn” Stradivarius, the 1990 Christie’s auction of which is said to have inspired the 1999 Academy Award-winning film, “The Red Violin.” You can hear Pitcairn play the famous instrument and see a screening of the film Sunday in a special performance 3 p.m. Sunday at the Main St. Theatre in Visalia.

The hubby and I went to Visalia for the Elizabeth Pitcairn concert with the ‘Red’ violin. It was amazing to hear the clarity of this instrument as she played not only the famous music from the movie, but other wonderful pieces as well. A couple of the musical selections even brought tears to my eyes – if you’ve seen the movie you know, and I also have other memories with the music. She is a talented musician and the crowd was very appreciative. Thanks for posting about this, otherwise we might have missed it.
And . . . we continue one more weekend with ‘A Picasso’ and my art at Brokenleg Stage. It’s been a great run so far, with enthusiastic crowds. If you haven’t seen it yet (or maybe you’d like to see it again – there have been return attendees!)- please get your tickets now! (they are going fast – and that’s not a cliche)
