I got the chance to talk with Billy Crystal again a few days ago. We spent a long time together a few months ago chatting about his feature film, “Parental Guidance,” that was partially shot in Fresno. This time we got together at the Pixar Studios in the Bay Area to talk about his new movie, “Monsters University.” It’s a prequel to his 2001 hit, “Monsters, Inc.”
Since voicing the first animated film, Crystal’s become a grandfather. He needed help from the “Monsters, Inc.” crew when his four grandchildren got to see what he has to go through as a celebrity.
“We were out and a paparazzi jumped out and took our picture. It really scared them,” Crystal says. “That’s when I had to try to explain to them what I do for a living.”
The problem was he needed to show them one of his movies but had a hard time coming up with the right one. He was the director of “61*” so that was no good and neither was “Mr. Saturday Night” because he wore so much makeup.
“I certainly couldn’t show them the orgasm scene from ‘When Harry Met Sally’,” Crystal says.
He decided to let his grandchildren watch “Monsters, Inc.” and they got to hear Crystal as the voice of Mike Wazowski. He didn’t get the reaction he expected. They were so excited about the character that whenever they called his house for a year they always ask to speak to “Grandpa Mike Wazowski.”
